Was wondering which you would get for someone. I am going to get my younger brother a knife for Christmas. I want something quality, preferbly made in the USA, plain blade of 3 inches or under, and a synthetic grip for ~$50.
With these guidlines I have come up with either the Benchmade 555 Mini-grip or the Benchmade 10210 Mini-Ambush. I was wondering which do you think would be a better grift. I am leaning towards the Mini-grip becuase everyone raves about them, but I just want to make sure I am not ignoring a good or better choice. Any other suggestions are more than welcomed. Thanks

PS: Where is a good place to buy a Mini-Grip? Best price I have seen lately is around ~$55.

A good friend of mine has the Bench Made 555 and I am very impressed with it. We have used it to clean Deer and even and Elk. It holds its edge much longer than comparable pocket knives.

If you really love your brother, upgrade him to the Cabela's version of the Mini Grip in D2 Steel. Its about $ 70 so make it Christmas, birthday and his Saint's Day gift. Its a great knife and the D2 steel is superior, IMHO, than the 440 that is normal to the Mini Grip.

Try this sight if you don't live by a Cabela's http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...made&noImage=0&returnPage=search-results1.jsp

You're a very nice brother indeed.

Between those two I prefer the mini-grip. The Mini-Ambushes I have handled have not had very smooth actions (in my experience this is a result of the type of lock it uses) and overall I prefer the handles of the grips. The only thing the Ambush had going for it was the doubled over clip. I like low riding knives though.

Spyderco Delica is another classic favorite in this size/price range. The Native is also a great value (especially from Wal-Mart), but if the 3" is a legal requirement then it is out by 1/8".

I actually own the 556 Grip and the 10410 mini Pika, pretty much the same two you are considering. Of the two, I prefer the grip, but frankly it's really a personal preference thing, rather than a performance thing. They are both really great knives for the price. The Pika has the strongest lockup I've seen in any folder, bar none, but the Grip is great too. The Grip is actually a bit smaller, so if clipless pocket carry is something you want (I do), the Grip is a bit better in that regard. Both have 440C steel (that's good stuff in a $50 knife), both are wicked sharp and hold their edge. You won't go wrong either way you select.

Yeah I have thought about the Delica or maybe a Calypso Jr. Especially the Calypso Jr.
The 3" limit is not a legal requirement, I just want to keep on the smaller side of pocket carry.

donniec, every so often a concern is raised about gunk, etc., getting into the locking mechanism of the Axis lock of Benchmade knives. I own several models myself, but I haven't used them in cleaning game.

What was your impression about the 555 after you were done with the hunt, and how hard was it to clean the locking mechanism when you were done?
