While cleaning and reviewing (playing with) my collection of knives, I noticed that something was missing: a knife with an Axis-lock.
I wanted a knife that was about the same size as a Spyderco Delica (large enough for some real work but small enough for easy carry, and not too scarey to non-knife folks).
The Mini-Griptilian 555 fit the bill perfectly.
Closed, the 555 is just 1/4" shorter than the Delica. But it's a different story when it comes to the blade: although the 555 has a 2 15/16" blade and the Delica has a 3 1/16" blade, the 555 actually has more cutting edge. The 555's edge is 2 14/16" while the Delica's edge is 2 12/16". Not much difference, but more edge is better.
The 555's bladeshape is what Benchmade calls a "modified sheepsfoot". Whatever they call it, I like it!
I think it gives plenty of belly while providing great tip strength. The design is very well suited for general utility work and can handle a wide range of tasks.
The Noryl GTX is textured for a secure grip that will not slide in the hand. Overall, it feels less plastic-like than the Spyderco FRN. This might be because the 555 has thicker handles and dual steel liners. No matter, it still feels more solid than the Delica.
Handle-wise, it might compare better with the Spyderco Vesuvius than the Delica.
The Axis-lock!
There's been plenty written about the Benchmade Axis-lock and there's not much that I can add except...
GET ONE!
This is the smoothest lock I have ever used. The Axis-lock has quickly become my all time favorite lock (only Michael Walker's BladeLock even comes close).
After using the 555 for only a couple of weeks, I'm already considering the 550 larger Griptilian.
The 555 Mini-Griptilian is just a little small for my hand, but that is acceptable considering that I wanted a smaller EDC knife.
After visiting Benchmade's website, I discovered more good news: the Mini-Griptilians are now available in more colors (green, purple, blue, and yellow). A yellow combo-edge Mini would probably make a fine high-visibility rescue knife.
So, if you're in the market for a small affordable Axis-lock EDC, I highly recommend the Mini-Griptilian.
I'll let you guys know if it developes any problems in the long run.
Good luck,
Allen.
