well i just got my first benchmade...little bummed it has play....side to side....and i cant tighten it anymore....the screw just keeps turning....but doesnt get any tighter....and the blade will actually move from side to side....is there something wrong? or is this just the nature off the lock?

It is the nature of the lock in my opinion. But on my 551, I was able to tighten it until there was no play. Unfortunately I lost the ability to let the blade drop with gravity or a slight push. You always have the option of sending it in to Benchmade for their warranty. I have felt silky smooth 556/551s without play before.

No problem even if it is a trade, just as long as it is a Benchmade. The warranty is a lifetime warranty as well.

If the pivot screw "just keeps turning", something is seriously wrong. Are there bronze washers visible on each side of the tang? If a washer is missing it could account for it.
Alternatively (and more likely) the pivot assembly's thread may have been crossed or stripped.

It's best to send it in to Benchmade for repair.

Like Steven said... something's wrong and BM will make it right. I've had "many minis" and full-size Grips. They've all been very solid in every direction when they're working as they should.

yea i took it apart and there arent any washers....will bm cover shipping? or do i gotta?

I think you have to cover shipping but check their website to be sure. Also, I hope this was disclosed to you before the trade. If not, and if it were me, I would take major issue with the other person.

There's something wrong with yours because it shouldnt keep spinning. That being said every single bm axis lock I owned has had minimal horizontal play. That includes higher end axis locks like the 940. Probably unnoticeable to people that are less anal about it than me. Doesnt bother me but I wont lie and say its absolutely rock solid.

lol well i traded a ten dollar flea market knife for it....i even told him the price difference and he was like "i dont care i just want something that looks cool"

My mini griptilian had no blade play in any direction out of the box and hasn't developed any after flicking it open hard probably nearly a thousand times.

Well it is a big win for you even with blade play. Definitely contact BM though, they should get you fixed up.

My recently purchased 556 was way off center from the dealer, so I sent it in, on my dime. They improved it (still off center a bit), sharpened it, and mailed it back on their dime. They threw in an extra clip, too. And, as mentioned above, you don't have to be the original owner. I'd send it in.

I have a very old mini grip from around 2002? with an oval hole and "antennas" on the butterfly, and the clip says Benchmade USA, NOT just Benchade. It's also in 440c steel. I've been told this was one of the earliest designs apart from saying "first production run". I've used it off and on for almost a decade, It's ROCK SOLID.
You need to send it to benchmade for warrenty work and a full spa treatment/sharpening. DON'T show it to your friend you traded it with, he'll be jealous in the condition it comes back and wish he never made the trade even if the other knife looked "cooler".
GOOD LUCK!
