Okay, for a small everyday folder, which is your pick between the 556 Mini-Griptilian and the Calypso Jr. (micarta with AUS-8 or the FRN with VG-10)?

Thanks,
Allen.

This is a real tough one. The BM has the awesome Axis lock, a great blade geometry, and Benchmades 440C. The Lightweight Calypso Jr. has a nice ergonomic FRN handle, Spyderco's awesome VG10, a flat grind as opposed to the BM's hollow grind, a grippy "fish scale" texture, and is about 1/3 the cost of the BM. Personally, I think that you should get both:D But, if that isn't feasible, go the Spyderco. I bought my SE Calypso Jr from www.eknifeworks.com last week and I've been very pleased.

Go with the BM. It's not hollow ground. It has nice nested liners and an awesome handle. Make sure you hold both before you buy and I know you'll pick the BM.

The Axis lock is also a kicker. No comparison with what the Spyderco has.

No opinion on your choice, but if you get the Calypso Jr. FRN in VG-10, make sure it's the plain edge version, not the Spyderedge. I have both and the plain edge works much better. The serrations on the Calypso Jr. tend to bind in the cutting material and I don't enjoy using it (the Delica in Spyderedge works much, much better). I kept the Calypso Jr. SE I bought for myself, but I returned three others I had bought as gifts. Jazzman likes his, though, so opinions differ on this knife. This is my $0.02.
