Hello knife brethren. I had an idea that I want to try and was looking for some input. I recently got a 581 and love everything about it except how fat the handle is. I was interested in thinning the scales slightly. I have a pretty good idea on how to do this with the g10 portions but the aluminum I'm not so sure about. Obviously this will void the warranty which I'm ok with (I've made alterations to my 950s and love them even more) but, I'd like to have a pretty firm idea on how to proceed before starting. I know the screws will need to be shortened accordingly as well. Any thoughts, ideas, similar experiences? Thanks in advance.

just take the width of the container for the coil spring into account before thinning anything out.

Good idea. I think I'll probably strip the entire knife down this evening just to get an idea exactly how everything is put together. Thanks for pointing that out.

There are youtube videos on how to take the spring out. I don't know if they would give you any ideas of the dimensions involved but they might help you with the disassembly.
