My mini rukus got stolen a couple years back. I'd cut some cocobolo scales for it.

I miss it a lot... it was my first benchmade.

So I just picked up a Barrage 581bk from JimW (thank you!)

Here's my first mod.

I polished all the mating surfaces too. Not that it makes a difference since it's assisted. But the lock mechanism chamfer on the mating surface definitely helps the locking and unlocking feel. Also mirror polishing the axis surfaces (both the pin and the blade surface it travels on) improves the feel of opening/closing and lock up.

I'm still looking for things to do. I may just end up cutting a ton of scales and inlays for fun. (Am semi-tight budget now, can't afford to buy tons of different knives) but it would be nice to be able to dress this one up depending on my mood, or its mood :)

feedback and recommendations are welcome!

looks cool! how does the new handle profile feel? looks a little like your rukus now,

Hi Pete!

It's good. I didn't do any polishing or too much rounding of the edges because I'm not sure i'm done taking material out yet. I'll just sit on this first cut for a bit and then make notes on what i want to do next.

you're right, it does feel a bit like my old rukus :)

Very cool mod, I did roughly the same thing on my 300sn and it helped the ergos a lot! I love my 581, and I actually think its my no.1 benchmade. I love the look of the liner holes trimmed off, good work.

Nice work. It looks like the modified handles are more comfortable. And yep it does compliment the 615, which has one of the best hand to knife ergos of any of the larger Benchmades. As an aside; for a smaller offering, I always hoped for a 'Mini mini Rukus'. On the other hand the 585 and 587 make up for that in many ways.
