Falling in love with this knife.. love the carbon fiber/wood combination. There are 2 versions that I am looking at: the "plain" 690 without the BC1 coating, and the 690BC1 with the coating. As far as aesthetics go, I think I like the plain polished finish better, but does the BC1 add something special? The reason I ask is because the price difference is $50 ($86 for the 690, and $136 for the 690BC1).

Thoughts?

All of my user knives with black coating eventually end up scratched.Doesn't bother me cause I expect it.
If you like the uncoated better you should go with that.
It's always a matter of preference. THe black coating, to my mind and knowledge, adds no functional value.

I've heard of boron carbide coatings taking a massive beating and coming out unscathed... after all, it is a lot harder than the blade its protecting. Not as good of a rust inhibitor than M2 unless undercoated, though.

I like it - but if you like the satin finish better, go with that, like TOB9595 said.

Whatever benchmade uses on my D2 minigrip is not that tough....heavy cutting through cardboard leaves light streaking on it. It's hard to see, but it's there--suffice to say, it would not take too much to scratch.

And I'd personally rather not have the scratched blade....I'm trying to decide myself between the black blade S30V native and a normal one...the black one is just so darn pretty.

I think the D2 grips are BK1...

If you don't mind my asking, where did find the plain 690 for that price? I've been sort of wanting one for a while now, but haven't seen them for less than ~$120.

I bought this knife from Pro Bass here in Cincinnati with the BC1 coating as it was all they had. I believe that I paid around $ 160 for it.

So far, it hasn't seen much use but my belief is that this coating is functional (though I'm not sure what that functionality it) as well as aesthetic. I don't think it is like the black coating on my BM Grip in Black D2 that I bought from Cabela's. That in fact wears/scratches off.

Either way, its a beautiful knife and has the feel of a very well made knife.
