I started the thread about the $50-$75 Folder. I have narrowed my search down to the BM Griptillian and something a bit more expensive- the BM 690S Elishewitz Knife. It appears to be a very good knife and I may treat myself. Is it as good as it looks? Thanks for your help!

Basenji703,

It's very nice, but not as nice as the photos.

Neither the carbon fibre nor the stabilized wood is glossy -- they're both a matte finish.

That means the carbon fibre is exposed and rather delicate; both surfaces have sustained some scratching in about a month of very light use and carry.

Also, the edge surfaces of the stablized wood is a little unfinished.

I've polished both sufaces with 600-grit sandpaper and oiled them with a cloth, and it's improved some, but it still doesn't have the glossy surface that I've seen most carbon fibre surfaces have -- especially in cars, watches, and tools.

The boron carbonitride coating is extremely durable and pretty, but it also picks up fingerprints very easily and doesn't shine off.

The blade profile is good for general cutting, and the thickness is nice. The lockup is reasonably good, but it doesn't have the solidity of an Emerson folder.

The teardrop clip is gorgeous, but it allows more movement in a rear pocket than a traditional clip.

All in all, I'd say it's a gorgeous knife. It's allowed me to get as close to a custom as I can for ~$120, but I would have felt more comfortable paying around $80.

I like to carry it when I dress up, and a MiniCQC7 isn't appropriate.

Hope this helps! If you want to know anything else, do ask.

Jon has summed it up well... But I'm a bit of a "tweaker" so I decided to give it a good look-over. I polished the edges and surface of the wood with Polywatch -I'm a watch-nut and this stuff is VERY fine-grain polishing-paste- and the improvement was huge. I rotate the knife and wear it two or three times a week, so it's not under a lot of stress.

I bought it as a "tactical-dress-custom-like" knife that wouldn't get too many heavy-duty work-outs. If you intend to buy it for heavy use, just don't. It will physically be up to it but it WILL get scratched.

I believe BTW the liner-lock is VERY solid and mine doesn't show ANY play; I might have got a good one... :D It really locks like a Mercedes.

Considered Elishewitz-knifes go for around $450, you could do worse than getting the BM 690. I'm not disappointed.

if you are going to do a lot of hard work with the knife, get the Griptillian. If it's more of a gent's knife, light-use situation, then the BM 690 is mighty purty. Look for a deal on it tho.

Thank you all for your replies!! Again, you have all been a great help. I went to a store that stocked BM and looked at the Griptillian and really liked it, especially the axis lock. But I really fell in love with the "McHenry & Williams" Axis Lock. I liked the shape of the blade and the feel in my hand. Got one on ebay for $90 plus shipping. Hope to have it soon. Again thanks for everyone's help! Hank
