I just receive this knife today and I notice something about the axis lock - when I push down on the axis lock spring it raises the blade up. Is this normal?

Also when using the axis lock spring to close the blade, the blade will not completely go into the folder until I completely depress the axis lock spring.

This is unlike my mini grips - where the axis lock spring will not effect the opening or closing of the blade at all.

Thanks for any help,
chu

My 710 works the same way. Im sure its normal but I dont know why the grips dont act the same way.

This is good to know, as I was thinking about the Sequel as an "upgrade" over the mini-grip. But I like the Axis opening on the mini-grip just fine, and wouldn't want to mess with a good thing, even if it's just a minor annoyance like you describe.

My first two knives that I carried with an Axis Lock, 960 and 940, both have the same action. I thought it was a function of the lock, sort of a mini excellerator to break the resting friction of the blade. It wasn't until I saw your post that I even knew that some knives didn't have the same action. Without knowing that the blade doesn't move on the Grips, I certainly wouldn't consider this an annoyance.

The 707 I gave my fiance doesn't do that.

I think there are different versions of the AXIS lock to deal with here...my 707 blade extends from the frame about 1/4" when I pull the bar back to open it. When it's closed it pops back in with the spring tension. On my 705, the blade would often bounce on closing that took practice to get it right...when Benchmade made the design modification the bounce disappeared. Comparing the two very similar knives, the 707 is a lot smoother opening and closing.

It's normal. As jkarp said, with development of the axis lock over the past few years a few things changed. The blade motion, the smoothness, the length of the axis slot, that’s a few of the changes that I have noticed. So don't worry about it!:)

The Axis function on the 707 is supposed to do that. I believe that the purpose is to make it easier to flick the blade open. Pulling the Axis release back gives the blade a start and a flick of the wrist will more easily open it the rest of the way since the blade's center of gravity is already slightly outward. The 530 operates the same way. The Griptilian does not have that action, which is normal for that model. The only mechanical difference is a different shape of the blade tang. My guess is that Benchmade is using that difference as one way to differentiate utility from tactical designs.
