I apologize that I didn't post in Maintenance but it's about "sharpening....." there.

I have an almost brand new (2 months old and no used) BM710 D2 knife. When I pull back on the Axis lock to unlock , there's a bit of a gritty feeling, like metal against metal (sticking) then it unlocks.

With the the blade in the closed position, if I pull back on the Axis lock, the blade will rise slightly.

Is this normal and it needs to be broken in or is it something that's wrong with my knife?

Thank you! :)

The rising from being in the closed position is normal. The gritty feeling isn't. Take it apart and clean it.

I usually flush new knives with oil to remove any "left-overs" from manufacture. A few trops at a time, cycle the blade open/closed a few times, and repeat.

With knives having pivot screws, such as the 710, I loosen the pivot prior to flushing.

A good way to clean out the axis lock is to get a handful of Q-tips and some 3-in-1 oil (that's what I use since it's common around the house). Use both sides of the first Q-tip to clean in the axis lock area, around the blade pivot, and through the gap between the lock bar and the handle scale.

With a second Q-tip put on a few dabs of 3-in-1 on the Q-tip and start oiling up the pivot area and the lock bar. This should make it nice and smooth along with getting out all of the black dingy stuff that has built up in there.

Proceed to open and close a few times to get everything out and repeat if necessary to make it open "silky smooth" again :)

This is what I do, I hope this helps, J.

One last thing. I was looking down the frame and blade for proper alignment and it looked good so I moved the spine and the blade wobbles back & forth.

I held it by the pivot area and shook it and the blade hits both sides of the handle inside.

Needs to be tightened right? When I tighten it won't deploy & if it back off, then the blade wobble is back.

This with a torx bit held in my fingertip, no room to tune the pivot screw it seems.

Yeah, the pivot needs tightened.

You have to adjust it carefully to get just the right tension. Use blue Loctite (242, 243, or 248) to lock the screw.

Some of my AXIS lock knives have a very small area where they will deploy easily and still have no wobble. It's a very fine line, sometimes it'll feel like you didn't even move the screw but it'll make a difference. Make sure you have loctite on before adjusting and once you do find that sweet spot let it sit for a day or so, that way the loctite has time to set up.

Thanks to everyone who answered my questions in this thread. All of my questions have been answered. I appreciate your detailed replies!!! :)

I had a similar experience with one of my 710's a few days ago I was working outside cutting timber with a chainsaw and doing other odd jobs around the house and manage to drop my 710 in some mud. The mud and dirt made its way into the AXIS lock system it would still deploy but made a real gritty sound like you were talking about.. I disasembled the knife cleaned it in hot water used a air compressor to blow it dry and applied Breakfree CLP and its again good as new!

SHADOW84 ~

I appreciate your post but mine is a new unused knife out of the box. Mine was a manufacturing problem. I can't disassemble it or I'll lose my Benchmade warranty. It's a bit better after doing the above steps but still the Axis lock bar is leaving a mark against the back of the blade where it rolls pver and locks it. It's not gritting anymore though. :)

Is it a mark or a shiny line from polishing due to rubbing?

Most Axis locks develop a shiny line or region where the Axis bar contacts the blade at lockup.

Well, there's a line across the back (tang?) of the blade.

The line is right to left, about 1/16" from the back (tang?) of the blade.

From the line it's got a scrape going to the back on one half and the other half looks untouched.

I don't know if that makes any sense but I can't describe it like a knifemaker could I guess.
