Hello I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this 710 I just bought when it at a local knife dealer it was brand new but reads " ATS-34 FIRST PRODUCTION RUN 1 of 1000" I had gone to the store looking for a new folder to take to Balad AB Irag nest month and the dealer offerd to trade my BM-42SS that I had on me even up for this blade since I never realy had a good use for the Balisong I took him up on the offer. When was this blade made?

The knife was made around 1999 or so when Benchmade first came out with axis locks. The knife is most likely not super valuable, but I would not make it a user since it might well increase in value one day. :D

I have a 710 proto dated June 1998. So your knife would either be late 98 or early 99.

You made out (unless the BM42 you traded with happens to be valuable for other reasons!) But I, too, have both a pre-production 710 and a 1st prod. 710 - next to the old "Ascent", it's one of the better models to come out of BM... And the 710 is about the nicest blade size and shape I've found in a clipped pocket knife! And it even has the Axis lock!!! LOL!!!
Hey, I use my 1st prod run whenever I can carry a larger pocket knife (I have to carry the 705 here in Seattle!) And if you're going into harm's way... well, it should take care of just about anything you'll ask of a pocket knife!
Good luck and enjoy the 710...

What a waste. :(

The 42SS would have held up to the desert conditions better, or you could have sold it for more than enough to cover the 710.

well kyclone, there ya go...Personally, I think you got the better deal, but i din't grow up around the butterfly style, so I never found them to be anymore useful than any other gimmick... But that big, recurved piece with an axis-lock... that I could appreciate!

I think you made a good trade. Why quibble over what you might have gotten by selling a knife compared to actually getting a good big tough folder? Enjoy the 710!

Balisongs would be great utility knives. They are intrinsically strong and easy to keep clean. Unfortunately, there are too many places they'll get you in trouble just carrying them. The military is no place to be getting in unnecessary trouble.

Thank you for the info on the blade I really didn't know anything on the value of the bm42ss that i traded for the 710. I bought the 42ss from newgraham last summer for $125 thinking it would be cool to have but all it's been doing was gathering dust in my closet never really had a good use for it plus in my unit Balisongs are a no-no for deploying with. So when he offerd to trade me for it I just thought I'd get far more use out of the 710 wasn't even looking for a limited production knife just a nice 4inch folder the 710 just happend to be the only plain edge folder that wasn't tanto point he had in stock the "1 of 1000" is nice on the blade too.

Ya you are right about that! The most important thing about a knife is how you feel about it. I have traded down befor just becaus I found another knife more usefull. I think you will really enjoy your BM in any model they are verry well made and reliable knives. :D

As I am not a collector of knives, but a user, a knife that collects dust has no value to me.
I am sure that you have traded wisely, the 710 is a great worker, my BM710HS gets alot of use and can fill both rolls as an EDC and a tactical folder.
