which steel is more desirable from a users standpoint as well as from the collectors standpoint.

Don't count out the original ATS34, 154CM or D2 for a great user. I have had two 154CM's and one D2, and am back with a 154CM model.

Yeah, I am envious of all of the M2 and M4 owners out there :(...

m4 is the best alloy i have used but we need an affordable package like the buck vantage pro or the endura.

From both a user and collector standpoint, the M4 is "better" because in the lab it will cut longer/better than M2 and because there have been (so far) a whole lot less of them manufactured. The M2 version was a regular offering for several years.

I happen to think, based on my knives and others I've read about, that the M2 710s are generally better made/assembled, but generalizations don't tell you anything about a specific knife, just the odds, and BM will fix pretty much anything under warranty.

I also agree with the post above - in real life, the ATS-34 (I have one), 154CM and D2 versions are excellent users - and there are no practical corrosion issues, which is not true with M2 or M4.

im asking because ive been presented with a trade for my brand new hssr for an 810-801 that is in like new condition. the only thing that im unsure of is that there is no XXX/300 etching on the blade.

Ever consider an M390 version? its pretty stain resistant and it compares to ZDP-189 I believe.

Possible blade swap?

Are you sure you've got the model number correct? ^^^

Is the marked with "cpm-m4"?
If so, i'd definitely go for it - a 710-801 without that writing... (i dont like it that much).
THe only thing that bugs me a little bit are the green handles - but that's my personal color preference and i guess once i'm trough with my 710HS (which is going to take quite some time :D) i'll just swap the handle scales.

AFAIK a knife with serrations has a lower value (collecting, reselling) than a plain edge.

yep, the seller sent me pics of the knife and box, the box reads 710-801 121/300

OK - you typed 810, which AFAIK doesn't exist...I'm not sure why someone would trade a 710 HSSR for a 710-801. The M2 knife is more common and the serrated blades go for less than the plain edge. However, I'm pretty sure the blade of the -801 should be marked with the billboard. If it's not, I'd make really sure it has the original CPM-M4 blade, and be advised that it may only have user value, not collector value. See this LINK for pics of how it should look.

I had a 710-801. The blade was marked "CPM M4," and 12 of 300.

The blade on the one you're considering should be marked accordingly.

Maybe BM replaced the blade - then it would make sense that there's no LE-scrawl on the blade - just the "cpm-m4".
So if everything else looks like a -801 i'd guess it is a real 801.

THey could have swapped the blades because there was an issue with the original blade or because the owner paid the 35 $ for a blade swap. In any case: the meaning of "slightly used" would be interesting.

And maybe the owner loves serrated blades, has multiples of the -801s but no HSSR and/or has no money, just that knife but REALLY wants an HSSR.

All of this is possible...but if I were trading knives, I'd want to see the paperwork from Benchmade, I think.
