I've been reading this forum for quite a while but I think this may be my first post.

I have had a BM 710 with the M2HS blade for several years and have been thinking of getting a new 710 with the D2 blade. Other than the D2 being closer to stainless, what difference am should I expect to see in the performance of the D2 v/s the M2HS. In particular, the ability to take a really good edge and hold it.

Thanks for any guidance with making this decision.

M2 an D2 are about the same as far as toughness from what I understand. However, D2 is much more stain and corrosion resistant when compared to A2 it also holds an edge about three times better. So over all, you should see better performance from D2 than you'd see out of A2.

A2?

I think you got your steels mixed up half way through ;) as far as edge holding, M2 will hold an edge longer than D2, but D2 should be easier to sharpen, D2 will be very close to but slightly less than S30V, M2 is just slightly under M4 normally. Also D2 will be more corrosion resistant.

I find D2 harder to sharpen than M2 or M4. Also D2 seems to have a toothier edge when sharpened, more so than M2/M4.
I prefer and seek out M2 steel. Manufacturers stopped using M2 cause it was too hard on their machines. Now that is some really hard/tuff stuff. Don't get me wrong; I have D2 and M4 knives and there's nothing wrong with them. They are fine steels. But, in my book you already have the best for hardness and edge retention. M2, M4, M390

Thanks guys for the responses. I think I will keep the M2 710 and start looking around for another knife to add to my little collection.

You might check out the M390 steel version of the 710 actually if you want another 710 with a great steel, it will give M2 a run for its money, probably better edge holding, and super stainless, its a dealer exclusive, I'm sure if you googled it you can find them, they're $149 I think, so just a little more than the regular D2 version.
