Benchmade 710 question

I was thinking about picking up a Benchmade 710 and I have heard that the edge of the blade actually makes contact with the backspacer causing a roll on the edge. Is this a design flaw particular to this knife or is it just a few knives that slipped past QC? Anyone else heard of this?

My M4 variant has a couple of tiny Dings in the blade. The blade is nowhere near the spacers so I would say its quality control.

I read that on the forums once or twice. The two that I own do not have this problem and is not normal for the knife. The solution BM has offered when these are returned is to replace the spacers with standoffs. So rest assured, BM will take care of you even if you get one like that.

I am acutally going to inquire with BM if I can get the standoffs from them lol.

Thanks! I'm grateful to have a sweet knife store close by where I can handle a knife before I buy it so I will make sure the 710 I'm buying doesn't have this problem!

Neither of my 710s whacks the spacer. A couple of more data points for you.

Yeah it's hard to tell because of the backspacer. I didn't know that BM had standoffs for the 710. I'm gonna inquire too

I've used my 710 off and on for the last 8 years or so and it's never had this problem. I've read about it before but I think only a few have been prone to this issue.

I had a few 710s come and go and one had pretty wonky blade play while the other was pretty solid. The one with the play touched the backspacer if I closed it too hard while the other had no such issue. If you ever had a problem with one benchmade customer service is top notch.

I would think the plastic back spacer that comes on the standard D2 model and some other variants wouldn't be hard enough to roll the edge of the blade. Barrel spacers I think could roll the edge if the blade closed down on them.

Just an update, looked at 3 knives all of the blades were hitting the backspacer. Ended up buying a spyderco and a kershaw instead.

Weird, I just actually checked both of mine, and I am 100% sure neither touches the backspacer. The old D2 model that I use as a my hard-work folder was really easy to check--the back spacer is covered with grime and there are no marks in the filth from the blade. The blade looks good, I've kept it sharp and give it the occasional tuf cloth rub, but the innards are pretty gross.

The down side to having verified this is that now I'm embarrassed at how dirty the inside of my 710 is and I have to take the whole knife apart and really clean it properly.

That is the first time that I hear something mentioning this. Mine has no problems.

No word of a Lie looked at 2 satin plain edge knives and one black model and the blades had already made a bunch of lines in the backspacer I wasn't impressed at all.

I've had a few for EDC for the last ten years and never ran into a problem. It's been one of the most rugged, bombproof, and useful designs I've ever had. Great knife in any of the steel options!
