Just bought a 710HS recently, and I really like the ergos and aesthetics of this knife. During the first two weeks or so of ownership, I did alot of "flicking" and "knifesturbation". The lockup was great when I first started using it, but now it shakes (side-to-side) like a baby rattle. I hope it's just a question of the pivot screw needing to be tightened. Now I have to buy a set of those torx screwdrivers to find out...

Is it the blade that wiggles side to side? If so, it's probably the pivot. Should be easy to fix with a torx driver.

If you have significant bladeplay and you haven't voided your warranty, I should think you could just send it to Benchmade instead of buying the torx wrenches?

Yes, it is side-to-side blade rattle. I am hoping that tightening of the pivot screw is all it needs.

If not, I imagine that it should be under warranty, if I still have the invoice, and if two weeks of compulsive-obsessive flicking doesn't void the warranty.

It's the stop pin. The stop pin is covered with a separate metal cylinder to make it possible to repeatedly flick the knife with few ill-effects. Unfortunately, that clicking is one of the few ill effects. Pin-point injection with epoxy should fix the trouble or you'll have to send it back or void the warranty by taking the knife apart to apply the epoxy.

Stop a moment, if he doesn´t know if it is just the pivot screw or not, it really makes no no no sense to think about this. The pivot is adjustable. Sadly some G10 scales allow the screw to get loose over time. First adjust it, glue it if you like and see if things are o.k. If not, come back again.

If a problem is posted before somone tried to help himself before, it is a bit boring to look or read what has happend.

I wait for the first one to ask, if it is covered under warranty, or if it does have any affect on the lifetime of the knife to open the box.

Speculating is a bore.

Thombrogan is right, it's most likely the stop pin.

Easiest way to check is to open the knife and see if it rattles then. When the blade is open it puts pressure on the stop pin and keeps it from rattling.

I have seen this in many knives, even customs.

I would start by checking the assembly screws, if any are loose they could be allowing a little slop in the pin area. Another fix is a drop of LockTite, it will bleed into the pins hole and lock it in place. But I would try lightly tightening the screws first to see if the problem is corrected.

Well, it turned out to be mostly due to the pivot screw being loose. Now that I tightened it the blade is secure (and much harder to flick). There is also a bit of stop-pin rattle, but nothing to be concerned about.
