benchmade 710 replacement advice?

hello.

I havnt been on here in a while (years, possibly) and ive been out of the loop for quite a bit as far as knife info and news.

anyways, for a while I was carrying a benchmade 710 McHenry and Williams, and I really liked the knife, betwixt the recurve style blade and the axis lock.

So, anyways, Im in the market for a replacement, and Id like some advice from some others as to what to replace it with, preferably from others who also liked the McHenry and Williams.

Id really like something like the axis lock, and preferably with a recurve blade. However, being completely out of the loop for the past few years, Im no longer familiar with the newer steels and developments, and would appreciate some advice from those of you who are up to date.

Im looking at a price range of somewhere twixt 100 and 150, but up to 200ish if its a particularly nice piece.

This is just for everyday carry, general usage, and Im not really concerned with defensive aspects, though i tend to be a bit abusive towards my tools, so it shouldnt be too delicate.

Anyone have any suggestions that they feel are a step up from the 710? or should I just get another 710?

any and all info/advice would be greatly appreciated. thanx

The BM 710s are now being made with D2 steel. I have a new 710 with D2 and a couple of older 710s (one in 154CM and one with M2HS). I think you will like the D2 blade.

thanx for the advice, I was also considering the commander, but I havnt handled one, and i have been really happy with the 710...

I was just hoping there were some more recent designs that would have perhaps surpassed it, or incorporated some of the more recent steels that im unfamiliar with.

Ill likely grap another 710, its a decent price, and i like the combination of the axis lock and the recurve.

are there any of you who have used both the 710 and the commander, and can offer any comparison/contrasts?

thanx again, i appreciate the input.

I got a 710-D2 and have found no reason to even look for something different it's comfortable in the hand and takes care of all the cutting chores I ask it to.

The 710 is a great knife, probably the flagship of Benchmades line, if not for the Grips. I moved on to other knives, but I would like to see a 707 styled blade on a 710.

The Commander is a liner lock. There's no way I'd trade an Axis lock for a liner lock.

It's hard to beat the 710. The 610 might be worth a look if you want something a little bigger.

i'd suggest you check the dejavoo series, which are real slicing machines and not too tactical-looking, or the ritter grip if axis is a must

hey, thanx for the advice all, ill prolly just go back to the 710.

one question though, is the black blade only available in the combo-edge? im kinda fond of black blades, partially for increased corrosion resistance, but mainly i just like the aesthetics of it, though not enough to get a combo edge...

again, thanx for all the input, I was real happy w/ my old 710, and i sorta wanted to try something new/different, but not enough to go w/ a design that i find less appealing

Yeah, the 710 can't be beat. BM pretty much got it right from the beginning.

They do make a plain edge black coated 710D2 I believe, its just not listed on their site.

The 710D2 is a great knife, no doubt about it.

You could also look at the Lone Wolf T2, which is another great knife.
Or the Spyderco Military, Chinook 3, or Manix (the Manix is being discontinued but is still widely available.)

I second taking a look at the BM 610 Rukus, and if too large then look at the 615 Rukus, mini in name only.

Currently, yes, black only on the serrated blades. They made black plain edge 710s for years, though, so you can probably find one on an auction or forum site. It'll be ATS34 or 154CM, though, so if you want D2 you'll wind up with an uncoated blade (D2 doesn't need coating, though there is the aesthetics issue you mentioned).
