benchmade 710 rust issue

ok, I just got a benchmade 710, and it's a great knife

problem- it's got a d2 blade, with no coating (i wanted a plain edge, the black ones came with combo edge). when i carry it clipped to my waistband, there's some rust near the opening stud. I kinda prefer waistband carry, and would like to continue carrying this way. Is there a coating I can put on it that would prevent it from rusting? preferably one that wouldn't require baking the knife?

could i just paint it with rustoleum? is there something like clear i could use?

or should I just get used to putting the thing in my pocket?

thanks!

The rust worries me.

Although I dislike it, try Tuff Cloth marine grade.

I prefer a good carnuba wax (car, boat or Renaissance Wax).

Either method seems to stop rusting pretty well.

getting the rust off isn't the problem, i just use some hoppes and my fingernail, but like to put something on it and fix the issue

tuf glide, tuf cloth, FP-10

sweat will rust D2, though. you'll have to keep an eye on it.

if you're going to carry inside your wb, you might want to look at a different steel; something actually "stainless"

Clear lacquer will keep the steel from rusting, but it will wear off if you cut something with the knife.

I worry about rust on metal because it usually comes back at that spot no matter the preventive action taken. Unless, of course, the surface is sanded down to fresh metal.

yeah, i think that the honest answer is to carry the knife in somwhere not my waistband. i can get used to normal pocket carry. I tried it out today and it didn't rust at all. I'll still give it a go over with tuff something or other, can't hurt.

while stuff would come off if i cut something, this is primarily a self defense knife for me, so it won't be used much (hopefully ever) in an intense manor.

it's amazing, i carried my 440C mini griptillian in my waistband for a year, and no rust. still, i like my 710

Yeah, I'm kinda questioning when it comes to the D2 that Benchmade is using in its current production.

Seems that I've seen on the forums more mention of actual rust occurring than I remember of earlier D2 knives. I have two 806s and various M2 knives, and although coated, have had no rust issues (along the edge or elsewhere after the coat starts wearing).

I wonder if heat treat can have a significant affect?

Whatever.

I'd still try the car wax (natural stuff) a try the next time you do the car/bike. I've done this with cheap machetes to slow down rust while in storage (boy can they rust without some protection). Also, you could go the patana route (I don't mind the look, but others dislike it).

The best answer is to use the knife for cutting or leave it at home. Get a pistol permit, and carry a gun for protection. A knife will get you hurt!

Dont ever tell anybody that, your knife is for emergency/utility purposes. I fyou were to tell a police officer that he could arrest you.

I would use some megiars tech wax. Synthetic wax will work much better. I use wolfgang sealant on my knives and it keeps them looking good.

yeah, it's really a last resort thing. he doesn't want your money, he'd also like to use you for cutting practice. i wish i could just carry a gun, but we don't all live in such gracious states :)

i'll get my hands on that wax

thanks

Even with a license to carry, having a firearm is not always legal or practical in places where having a knife might be. And assuming we're all smart enough to flee if we can do so without further endangering ourselves, a knife is a hell of a lot better than harsh words or a mean stare.

How do you know he can't legally carry a blade for self defense? (concealed or otherwise) Your local laws are almost certainly not the same as his local laws...

Generally, local and state laws proscribe the same penalties for carrying a large knife as a gun. Knives are very poor weapons, even if you are highly trained in their use. They still beat bare hands, though.
Bill

Ah, but most states/locales also state carrying anything for use as a weapon is illegal.

Never tell anyone that you carry any object for use as a weapon. It is just plain stupid in today's world to do such a thing.

Besides, a 4-inch blade ain't large. :)

I would think that if walked around baltimore with a handgun I would get in far more trouble than if i had a knife.

We're really at the mercy the of the scum here. And I'm not 21, so I can't get a handgun anyway.

For the untrained, a knife is a dangerous thing. Still, better than nothing, but I suggest a good pepper spray (which is probably illegal in Baltimore, too!)
Actually, I suggest moving!!

Freeze +P. It's a stream, rather than a spray. Much more effective, and less chance of the wind blowing it back on you. The local Sheriff's Dept. uses it.
