Benchmade 710 Tip-Down Clip?

Could you change the clips on some Benchmade 710s to make the knife a tip down orientation?

As much as I like the 710 and the Axis lock, I greatly prefer to carry my knife in the outside of my right hip pocket. I've tried this with my 710, but...

..with the tip-up orientation, and from-the-box pivot tension, the blade tends to open and stab me in the hand when I reach for it. Tightening the pivot enough to prevent this leaves the lock very stiff and hard to use.

I even have a well used D2 710 you can use to experiment on!

Thanks!

My first question as to doing this is how it would affect lock manipulation by having a clip right near the button on one side? I am just not sure. Also, I'm not sure what the liners on that knife are made out of and if stainless steel it could be that its harder than the tap or hard enough to just break one trying to thread a hole in it. It may be I'd need a carbide to even drill the things. I really don't know. I've seen the 710 but the last one was years ago.

If you want me to look at it go to my low rider clip and mail instruction thread pinned at the top of page one here on my forum with the other pinned posts and fill out a work order form and print that off to mail with the knife. I'll look it over and when it arrives here I guess we'll go from there once I examine it. ;)

Thanks

I'll send it out after the holiday package rush. I realize the experimental nature of the attempt!!!

Do you do a low riding clip for Benchmade 710 as a replacement for the factory clip? If so I might be interested in ordering a pair.

Yes the Benchmade 710, Griptilian and mini Griptilian, Harley Davidson Hardtail and many many others all use that standard 3 hole clip pattern invented by Sal Glesser in the early 80s when he used it on his first Spyderco models. That clip is used on millions of knives now from all manner of make, manufacturer and origins.

About the only difference from one to another on knives using this clip pattern is where the fold over for the 180 degree bend will be. The location along the stem for this fold will be in different locales from model to model. On the 710 its roughly 10mm from the screw position. On other models it can be 6 mm yet on others 13 mm. You measure from the mid point of each of the two wider set holes for the clip to the end of the knife or the first spot the clip would overhang off the bottom or spine of the body whichever comes first. It just varies. So what that means is that the clip may fit on multiple knives using this same clip pattern. This can range from Emerson, Kershaw, Spyderco, and other Benchmades but it may not fit as well on some as on others.
