Hey guys. I'm gonna be getting the Benchmade 710 and I've heard rumors of quality control issues with them. I was hoping you guys could debunk those rumors

What I heard was that the blade could hit the back spacer. This would cause the tip area to develop a flat spot. If this is the case customer serice has your back. I heard that you can send it in and them will install barrel spacers rather then a solid spacer.

Woodysone called it, I never heard of this until just recently. I have 2, neither have this issue. I just sold one that did have this issue, and I told the new owner about the problem, which is minor and can easily be fixed.

The 710 is one of the best knives by Benchmade and one of the best production knives out there, period.

Was the one that you sold the one in 154cm or d2

I only have bought/sold D2 versions... not ready to pony up for m390 for an extra $100 on a 710... I dump money into customs at that point :)

D2 is a fine steel.

I love my 710, easily my second favorite knife (just behind my Sebenza). Carry it nearly every day. No problems with it at all.

I purchased a 710 a few months ago and the issue with the blade hitting the backspacer was still present. A quick trip to benchmade fixed her right up though.

Could have been older dealer stock though, but I'm just posting my experience.

Besides the backspacer, the only thing I've heard is a little blade play. But, this is a flagship model too and there are tons of them out there, so you gotta wonder how many problems there really are.

I got one fairly recently and think very highly of it. Great design!

I've had the D2 version and the M390. Both hit the backspacer, but that is easily remedied by sanding that area of the backspacer down. I didn't like the knife as much with the standoffs. I eventually gave the D2 version to a good friend of mine, and have been carrying the M390 version every day for a while now.

The 710 is a big folder that seems smaller than it is. It's almost unnoticeable in the pocket, and you'd never know you're carrying damn-near 9 inches of knife around.

The 710 I had didn't have that problem. It was a while back though. Is it a newer production thing?

Anyway, I'd go for it. The 710 is an amazing knife. Definitely one of my favorites. If you can, order from a dealer who will check the actual knife he is going to send you for that particular problem. If you order from a good dealer who cares and knows their stuff, they WILL check it out for you. I have the guy I order from check every folder I order for blade play and a few other QC issues and he has no problem doing this.

You will enjoy the 710. It is one of the all-time best.

Have a D2 that hit the plastic spacer, leaving flat spot on edge. BM installed barrel spacers. Now fine. Have an M4 that hit the original standoffs, brand new. Got custom scales and different shaped barrel spacers installed. Now fine. Have an M390 that hits the plastic spacer, has cut its own relief slot so I'm fine just leaving it.

I still love 710's despite having had issues with them. It seems like the design shouldn't be developing more issues as time goes on. This is the most annoying part about the model to me.

Fear not. One of the best blade out there. BM does their D2 very well, and one of the best costumer services in the business. Great choice.

I have 2, one with a spacer (M390) and one with barrel spacers (CPM-M4) and neither of any issues.

I've had mine for a few years now (D2). I hadn't heard of this particular issue either, and mine does not exhibit the problem. I would buy one. In the rare event that yours does have the problem, Benchmade are some stand-up folks who will take care of it without any difficulty.

Great knife. Mine hit the backspacer but I decided to just sand it, I didn't want to wait. That was the only problem though.

Ive had many since they came out in 1998,never had a problem, still have one, they are such a great knife to carry.i added .165 standoffs, even though it wasnt hitting the spacer.looks much better. too bad the standoffs werent standard,id also like to see multi color micarta or carbon fiber as optional handle choices.....

Mine had issues with contacting the back spacer. Emailed them, sent it in, waiting to get it back. Shouldn't cost a penny.
Other than that the quality is fantastic.
