Well I received my Benchmade 710 the other day. I have to say that this is one great knife!!! The quality and finish is as good as my 721, nad 910. Better in resopects since it has the bronze washers. I was suprised to find it easy to open with the bronze washers, and the fact that it is new. It is also non-cumbersome as I had not expected, from what many said. :D

is the spacer on the back non-symmetrical? as in from a spine view with the knife blade facing away from you is the left side of the Delrin spacer more rounded and lower than the liner with the right side being more precisely fitted?

wondering if all 710's are like that or only some...

it does fairly symetrical, but the left side is slightly rounded. More than likely they are all that way, the piece looks to be molded. It doesnt detract from the appearance in my opinion though.

yes it does not distract from use but it does allow quite a bit of crud from my pockets to seep between the liner and the spacer. On my 806 the spacer is fit perfectly and prevents those bits from collecting in the gaps

i guess the 806's are cut to fit instead

wow curious, I havent had this problem with mine. it is rounded, but I havent had anything get between the spacer and liner.

The 710 is an awesome knife. Mine has a M2 blade and it cuts like crazy. You may want to locate a thread by Joe Talmadge about re-profiling the edge. Took mine down to about 18 degrees per side and it outcuts most folders I own.

If you don't like the backspacer, some have replaced it with posts you can buy from a knife supply store. However, the backspacer is more comfortable to me.

what was the fit/finish like on yours?
on mine right at the butt end one liner looked like it was dropped. steel dented a bit and shredded bits look like a scratch. then on the underside the liners look notched. dunno if this is normal factory quality or if the knife was carried...supposedly new though

the 90 degree corner right above the thumbstuds that's close to the stop pin came with the BT2 already worn away too. Though it does not contact the stop pin. Wondering if yours came like that or if it's due to pocker wear

Geode,
the backsapcer on mine is fine, I havent had any complaints, but thanks for the suggestion.

Curious,
the fit and finish on mine is really good. As far as blade coating mine is satin. It does not sound right that the finish above the thumbstud on the 90 dgree angle (Im assuming your talking about the spine?) is worn there, or missing. Personally I do not think pocket whear should do something like that. The wear would be on the blade where its cutting, or been sharpened, pivot area (maybe, considering its a benchmade), and even then it should be minimal.
Now saying that the liner is dented, it sounds that perhaps someone did carry it? I have seen knive before that may have had small dents, but never on a benchmade. How long have you had this knife? It may be a longshot, but I would email customer service at benchmade, better yet call them and ask if they can help. What you have mostly are cosmetic problems, but their cust/srv is pretty good. I think that the fact that finsh is worn of the spine is reason enough for you to have a valid compliant. It would be different if it were in a place that receives alot of wear, but the spine is one place it should'nt. perhaps if you were beating on the back of the blade, or doing "spine whack" tests, but other than that what could cause it?!? I would give it a try, you have nothing to loose, but a few minutes of your time.

there were many forumites here pointing c-2003 in that direction. Hope he will do it.

Curious,

as you compared the 710 to the 806, i got a question on your 806: Are both sides of the blade shaped symetrically, or do they vary?

No not the entire spine of the blade. Just the part where the spine starts to dip into the groove that hits the stop pin when the knife is opened. The junction right where the tang moves up to mee the blade.

When the knife is closed that part is "above" the thumbstuds and is right between the serrated/grooved liners by the top.

blop

I will call the dealer and talk to him first. But I don't expect him to know if my knife was carried b/c I'm the one with it in front of me. That's why I was curious as to what I should look for that might tell me if the knife was carried or not. I dont' think the BM team will take the time to tell me that

As for the 806 the bevel edges are (surprise, surprise) pretty even on both sides in angle and in thickness. The coating is bang on crisp to the edge (unlike the 710 who's coating seems to darken as it goes towards the edge and does not end in a smooth line). The primary bevel and everything else is very symmetrical. Why, is yours asymetrical? The 710 has a pretty bad edge. One side is waaaay thicker than the other and the angles don't match up. That thing will be a b!tch to sharpen...

I don't have a good digital camera to do it and I wouldn't be able to post the pic here anyways with my member status.

Hmmm...lemme try to explain better. Pretend you are looking at a 710HS CLOSED:

1) Hold the knife up perpendicular to the floor with the AXIS closer to the ceiling and the clip closer to the floor. Face the closed blade head on.

2) You should see that above the thumbstuds the blade's spine seems to "end" (b/c it dips into the tang's ramp).

3) This spot where it "ends" is like a "corner" or "90 degree angle"

4) On my 710 out of the box I had a horizontal line of BT2 rubbed off right at this spot. Since this spot does not touch the stop pin when the knife is opened I am guessing that the only way it could wear off is when the knife is closed and carried in a pocket. This is because this corner/junction protrudes slightly since it is not recessed between the liners.

My guess is that I was sold a carried knife that was returned even though the dealer insists that it is brand new from Benchmade. However if other ppl also have this occur on theirs then maybe I am wrong. I have no brick and mortar store to go take a look that offers the 710HS in my area so that is why I posted this. Do you understand better now?

from what you've described it does not sound natural. I would call customer service, or email them. Personally I feel making a call makes more of an impression. I would contact them either way, you certainly have nothing to loose.

I hope this helps some.
