I am looking for a good quality 3.25" to 3.5" blade folder and have narrowed it down to these two. Actually I haven't completely eliminated the Emerson CQC-7A, but it is a long shot. I have handled both of these recently and have found them both to have very good quality and handling. I would probably use this knife for hiking, camping, self-defense, and miscellaneous chores around the house. The 721 appears to be a little nicer, but the Griptillian is about half the price. What are your thoughts on these two choices. Which would you choose and why? Which has the more useful blade shape in your opinion? Thanks for your comments. I would also consider other choices.

While I love the solid G-10 handle of the 721, I would say the drop point blade shape of the 551 Griptilian is better suited for everyday utility chores/self defence. Personally, I prefer the modified sheepfoot 550 Griptilian, but if I had to choose between the 721 and the 551, I'd go with the 551.

Both have quality steel, quite similar blade shape, and the same great lock. The Griptilian has a slightly longer blade and a slightly longer and more versatile handle. It also would be a little more sure handling with cold, wet hands. Also, I could own 2 Griptilians for nearly the same cost as 1 model 721 ... that's better than anyone's replacement guarantee! I'd go with the 551.

I think it's accurate to say that the differences are in materials, not in quality. The 721 uses a more expensive steel and G-10 scales which are machined as opposed to being molded like the scales on the Griptilian. So the manufacturing cost is higher in addition to the more expensive materials. I think you could expect to have about the same functionality from either. It gets down to your willingness to pay for the differences, not so much a difference in utility. Take care.
