i just got it and have heard that it is a very smooth action. it is by far the smoothest action of any folder that i own, its almost too smooth. ive been carrying a 3.5" blade for over 15 years and have just decided to step up to a 4" blade so i picked up the BM 740 and a 710 and im slightly leaning towards the 740 for the edc role. gotta check it out

When we first got them in at the shop I work at, we had some fun holding them horizontally, spine towards the floor, and giving a quick downwards jerk. The blade would pop up and open! Now that's smooth! :D

I bought one last year but sent it back. The lock was super loose. Because of the way the handle scale is cut back your finger releases the lock with very little pressure. Not up to Benchmade's standard.

Bought one a month ago, if it's possible felt that the action was indeed too smooth. Bought one of the mini dejavoo gold boxes and the action seemed to be a little better, but it will never get carried.

I love my 740.
I just tightened my pivot screw EVER so slightly (just under 1/8 of a turn) and it made it much more better. Still just as smooth as can be, but without worrying about slicing into my finger when releasing the lock. :)

yep thats what i just did too.

The first production 745 I owned also had a loose lock with a lot of blade play from spine to edge. Sent it back twice and it still wasn't right. Traded it off and later got a newer 740 which is smooth as glass and shows no blade play at all.

I find I actually like the larger blade and bigger overall package, and out of the 30+ Benchmades I own this is the smoothest opener.

I have noticed that on several of these knives the ball detent does not function properly and will not really keep the blade in the closed position. If you turn the knife over the blade will flip open.

That's exactly what I had to do, too. In my case I didn't like the little bit of horizontal blade play. About 1/8th of a turn on the pivot screw and the whole knife came together perfectly.

It's a real nice knife, excellent blade, comfortable handle. It's no fighter, but a good everyday folder for light to medium use.

My 740 is becoming my favorite EDC and I've got a lot of folders. The action is the smoothest of any folder I own. I really like the size of the handle, not too big, not too small. I don't know if I'd take it to a knife fight (hope to never happen), but for everyday use, it is a keeper.
