I have a chance to pick up a 760 BK first production run it's number 600 something (I can't remember the exact number) out of 1000, NIB for $200.00, is this a good price? Second does anyone know what class this knife is? The box is black but the web site list it as blue class.

Dave,

The first production 760's shipped in black boxes, after the first production run was over, the knives were shipped and listed as blue class. $200 seems a little high if you're buying a NIB knife from an online retailer. Buying from brick and mortar store, $200 is about average.

First production runs rarely if ever equate to a higher price or desirability vs. standard production. Limited Edition, yes, First Production, not so much.

I don't care one way or another as long as it's the knife I want at a price I find reasonable. The 760 is a nice knife, one of the best offerings from Benchmade this year.

Best,

Heekma

The 760 was produced in 2008 originally, right?
If you are getting the M4 steel version (which I think is the first producstion run), the $200 might be an average price, provided the knife is indeed NIB. If it is the 154CM version, then that price is a little too much.

It seems to be about $230 from online dealers, though on eBay they come as cheap as $165.

I'm pretty sure that 154CM version would be the BM Blackwater folder that uses the same Lum design? It does have some differences though.

Apec, I think youa re correct. But there was also an image I had seen on the Benchmade forums (it was a review), it shows a side by side of 2 760s they had the same handles and the M4 blade was the FP, the 154CM was the standard. It could have been a blade swap?

It is new in box. The box is black. The knife has printed on it first production run 634 or 600 something of 1000. I was so taken by the knife I didn't check blade steel.

I'm looking at one right now. CPM M4 is engraved on the other side of the Benchmade logo, to the left of the thumbstud and Bob Lum logo.

Hmm, I wonder if I should go for one. The ones on eBay are in CPM-M4 steel. And with titanium handles too... But that Kershaw Speedform looks sweet too, and I already have the Tilt and 0551 on preorder.

GAH!

Too many knives, not enough money:thumbdn:. And not enough excuses to use them either:mad:.

The 760, actually, the 760BK LFTi or 760SBK LFTi (combo edge), thus far has only been made with CPM M4 tool steel in a Tanto-style blade. Any other blade material would represent an aftermarket swap. The initial pre-production knives were shipped in both blue and black boxes, although it is clearly a 'Blue' knife. Also, it was new in '09 - that catalog and the website agree with my micrometer - they are .150" thick at the spine - a healthy blade with an MSRP of $270 (Mine was marked $189 in a local store where I bought it 7/09. This year's 790 Subrosa is a .125" clip point assisted S30V blade in a Ti framelock, too - MSRP $240. I like my 790 much more than my 760, as I am not much for Tanto edges, although the 790's assist feature isn't a plus - to me.

Still - if the Tanto edge puts you off even a teeny bit, look at the 790 Subrosa introduced this year.

The 760 is a FINE knife, indeed.
$200? Could be better, but not too bad.
I love that knife.
Once I can afford a Tom Krein regrind (retemper... does Tom do that?) I'll have a freaky good knife.

Don't hold your breath re Krein regrinds - he announced last month that he won't be doing regrind work for the time being. Again - check out the 790 Subrosa for a different grind/profile.

Really? I wonder where this came from then. It could very well be the Blackwater knife.

There are other makers that will regrind your blades. Just have to look a little harder. For what you would spend on a regrind, and a retemper, you could buy a "freaky good knife" to begin with. Just a thought.

The Speedform IS very sweet! Very solid feeling knife in hand.

RevDevil,

Read the forum thread you referenced - and look at the pictures. He identifies that as the Blackwater knife - and lists it's faults. The 760 is an improvement.

Crap... that's what I get for resting on my laurels.

there is clearly a 760 and a blackwater tanto on the pictures, i haven't read the review but at the first glance i saw blackwater in the text and the clip placement is different.
