Benchmade 770--Can I Go Wrong?

Short, quick question. Can I go wrong with a BM 770 silver, plain blade as my first folder?

In other words, can I do better? I want the silver and plain blade, or should I get the serrated (don't like it, but will if it's 'better') and black (hear the finish wears, is this true?) blade?

How is it any less tactical than the AFCK? Is the AFCK their flagship knife, and if so, is the 770 any 'less' of a knife?

I wouldn't say that the AFCK was necessarily the flagship knife of Benchmade, although it is a fantastic knife.

The 770 is a beauty, and would be an excellent choice for a first folder. I particularly like the blade size (~3") and appearance of the 770 for an EDC.

The AFCK is more "tactical" in appearance, with a longer (~4") blade and black G10 handles, and would probably be better suited for a "defensive" knife if that is what you are looking for.

You won't go wrong with either, but for an everyday carry knife, my vote would be for the 770 :)

I believe you are referring to 771BC, which has silver Al handles, 770 is CF. And no you can't go wrong :) I got my 773 (black handle) and immediately ordered 771. I like it a lot more than the original 770 CF version. There are some differences and I like it better this way.

771 is 2.8" blade, AFCK 4". I carry 773 as my small folder. Doesn't scare ppl. The blade is really thin, 0.09" I wouldn't use it for cutting something rough for sure.

Some pix for 771/770 comparison:

I wouldn't consider the 77x knives "tactical" at all. Not that that's bad, just that I think they're designed for something else.

Personally, while I really like the 77x, and keep wishing it weren't so, they really are too small for my hands and I just can't open them one handed without a really awkward positioning of my hands/fingers. YMMV, but I'd recommend playing with one at a store before buying.

I have had a 771 w/ Silver aluminum handles for a couple of weeks. The axis lock system is very, very good. Due to the light weight it makes a great EDC. I also have the 941 Osborne and with its heftier weight I think it is a more useful knife but not as unobtrusive in the pocket. I used to be a big Spyderco fan for affordable folders but the BM axis lock has won me over in a big way.

I've had the 770 for quite some time. It's great. Decent steel, so the blade takes and holds a fairly decent edge. The carbon fiber scales look fairly classy. It's so light you won't even notice you're carrying it, and it's small enough that it doesn't really print through your pants pocket.

I like the 705 better as a first Benchmade. I think it handles better than the 77x or 94x models. I guess just because of the width. I prefer plain blades, uncoated for working knives and black combo blades for the display queens. On a "favorite" knife I end up with one of each. Did that with the 705, 910 Stryker and 800 AFCK. No bad choices here, yer gonna get more anyway!! - Lee

I remember when the 770 first came out I was real excited about it. I almost ordered one right away, but needed a little more time to get the money together. In that time I happened to stop by a knife store and see one in person. It was gorgeous, and way too small. I just couldn't open it comfortably with one hand, and if I had ordered one I know I would never carry it.

What I'd suggest is that you spend more time reading here and the Benchmade forum, and lotsa online knife stores and decide what you want in a knife, and what exactly you want to use it for. Then get out to a knife/gun store/show and try to handle all the knives you think you might be interested in. A knife in your hand for 20 seconds will tell you more about whether or not it's right for you than a dozen threads here will.

The 770 looks great, but it's really small. The AFCK is full size and will handle anything, but might scare your coworkers. Any of the knives in between (705, 94X, 72X, 73X, 710, etc.) will be more versatile than the 770. Take another look at what's out there.

Ya, the 705 is as small as I go. The 705 is a great knife. The 770 is brilliantly made, but it is too small for me too. I have a 770, if you want it.

I saw a BM770 at the store a few weeks ago. Beautiful knife. After your comments I thought it would be too small, but the size is right for me! But I just spent $680 in ammo, got car and apartment payments...soo.... might be a while ;)
