I am looking for a small gentlemen's knife like the Benchmade 770 but with a thinner blade at the tip. It needs to be between 2.80 and 2.95 inches under 2.5 ounces and of high quality. I may go with the Benchmade 770 if I don't find what I want. If anyone owns one how do you like it?

I have a pre-production model that I got from Grand Prairie back when they were first announced. I love it as a dress-up, go uptown kind of knife. Mine has the carbon fiber handle and this has been very carefully bevelled at all edges. Every bit of metal but the blade has had very nice file working done on it, even to the pivot screw and the opening studs. I could suggest only one improvement and that would be to include a Spyder Hole into it in some fashion. That would, however, detract from its "imperiously slim" lines, of that there can be no doubt, so perhaps not.

The 154 CM steel holds an edge well and is fairly easy to touch up with a Spyderco 204. It will cut much better than its size would seem to indicate.

My only problem is that it is slightly too long for a federal office building, where the law specifies a blade of less that 2.5". :(

Oh, and it is pretty strictly a right-handed knife.

I bought my father a carbon-fiber handle 770 last Father's Day and he loves the knife.

It's very classy and just oozes with Benchmade quality!

Good luck,
Allen.

How do you figure that? It's an Axis lock which is well known to be lefty friendly, and the clip is movable to the other side. It also has dual thumbstuds. It will work equally well for a righty or lefty.

i'm not sure on the thumbstuds, but the Pre Prod (which FullerH mentioned) was only milled for a right-handed clip. i think they changed this for the first production run.

abe m.

My apologies. After looking at mine a bit more, it is recessed so it's flush. I never really noticed that before since I don't use the clip anyway.

I have carried a 770 for almost two years and I use it for jobs that ought to be tackled by a bigger knife. On many occasions I have put away bigger, hunting type knifes and got the 770 out just because it is up to most tasks. The 770 won't disappoint you and the 154 is an excellent metal. Easy to sharpen and will hold an edge. On a recent duck hunting trip a friend was cleaning ducks and asked to borrow it and after cleaning a couple of ducks he looked at me and said it was the best knife he ever used. I just got the 204 diamond rods and have been doing some sharpening this week. Although the 770 has been used a lot the last couple of months it still seemed as sharp as most of the others after I had sharpened them. I just gave it a couple of licks on the fine stones and stuck it back in my pocket. Good luck.

Well that did it, I got one for $99 new, last one, I like a small elegant tough knife and I have never held this one. Thanks for the replies especially jjmc2001, good to hear the 770 can take it. I have a BM 710 and BM 705 in 154CM and love the steal, such a nice finish and edge and easy to sharpen.
