Hi Guys,

I had posted here a couple of weeks about folder suggestions with black blades. I finally settled on a Benchmade 806D2. Its and awesome knife.

The only thing is that I have never owned a good folder before and when I received this yesterday, I was surprised as to how long the 4" blade really is. Unfortunately, I did not realize this at the time, but CA Law considers it a misdemeanor to even have this sucker in my car, let alone carry it on me. Apparently, the largest balde size that is legal to have in CA is 2.5 inches. My folder is a damn machete next to a 2.5 inch blade!!

Anyone have any suggestions, tips for me in avoiding law enformcement problems? (please, no smart-ass replies, I know there are plenty of them)

Thanks everyone!

I thought the only state limit was for autos. There may be more restrictive city ordinances though.

I'm not USA-native, so I'm probably the least qualified to answer this, but here in Belgium, all knives are practically illegal (OK, not if they don't lock).
So I usually carry a spyderco military and the BM 806D2 (believe it or not, but the regular BM 800 has an even bigger looking blade).

But when trouble is expected (mass events where people get searched),
I switch to a cheaper non-clip knife. I even once removed the clip and let it in my pocket like that. Then you can't draw it fast, and the weapon aspect get's reduced bigtime.

So, my advise, tie a lanyard, remove clip and polish blade (black blades always look nasty - do a search on my name here, a week or so ago I posted some pics). This makes it less weapon like.

Hope to be of any help,

greetz and take care, bart.

I know some cites have 2.5 blade laws in CA, but i think there is no limit to the size of a folder you can carry state wide.

IF you need a 2.5er check out the spyderco salsa.

As already stated, there is no state restriction on folder length. Ask Jim March: he carries his Sifu! Anyway, the 2.5" rule applies to autos. Check your local statutes though.

As guys have already said, there is no length restriction for knives in CA, and any size (non-auto) folder can be legally concealed. Do a search in the Knife Laws Forum for lots of information on CA law. I often carry my 806D2 (awsome knife) in addition to a SOG Night Vision and a Sifu.

The limit for autos is 2".

Some cities have more restrictive laws, what city are you in?
