Is there a way to make the 806D2S into an automatic? Benchmade has an Axis-Lock auto already being produced, so Im assuming it IS possible. I would just like to know what is involved and if it is a feasible project to undertake.

Thanks.

I happen to EDC a BM 806SD2 and personally would not even consider converting it. All of the time and hassle for what benefit?

Without modifying it, it can be opened one-handed as fast or as slow as necessary. Converting it to auto would make it one-speed and therefore less controllable IMHO.

Maybe I'm missing something but this kind of modification would not be an improvement. Now CF scales or a satin finish, that would be nice.

I agree...Why bother? I had a MOD auto awhile back, but I swear that I can open my Benchmade 730/710/805, etc. quicker than I could open that auto...And there are more "things" to go wrong with an automatic folder.

Two words: gadget factor

i believe this has been discussed many times on these forums, the gadget factor of using an automatic knife. It's fun. Plus there is always a garauntee that the blade will always open. It doesn't matter how good you are at opening your knife, there will be a few times that the blade just doesn't want to open because you didn't flick your wrist the right way. And who knows, maybe one day I'll develop carpel tunnel syndrome and can't open my knife with a flick of the wrist... which brings another topic to mind... are people suffering from carpel tunnel legally allowed to use an automatic knife like a one armed person?

There's something to ponder.

But going back to the original topic, I would like to know what would be invovled in a conversion project. for example, what tools I would need if I became seriosuly interested.

thanks again

I can understand that desire. If you are determined to do this I'm sure you will learn a lot in the process.

I also own autos not for their deployment speed -- which can be matched or even defeated by many manual mechanisms in the right hands -- but for the wow factor.

:)

I wish I could give you better advice, but this is way out of my league. As a fellow 806 owner, user, and lover, and also as a devotee of auto knives, I can only wish you the best of luck !

I wouldn't reccommend flicking your wrist to open the knife. Popping it with your thumb is faster, more reliable, and places the knife into a forward grip immediately.

The *wow* factor is important, but as it is you can use any Axis locking knife like a gravity knife with a little practice. Sticking a spring in it seems like a one shot gimmick to me. Converting an Axis lock to auto seems like it would be a lot simpler than other locks.
