I received the Benchmade 810-1401 Contego in M390 to test and review. This will be the full testing format on 5/8 Manila rope, cardboard and wood. The rope testing format is making slicing cuts, draw cuts through the rope and testing down pressure every 20 cuts until it reaches 20 LBS. The knife was reprofiled to 15 degrees per side on an Edge Pro and finial edge finish is 400 grit SIC as I do in my normal testing format.
1st up is the rope cutting, the knife made 400 cuts on Manila rope until 20 LBS was reached, the knife would still slice printer paper clean when finished. The knife felt good in hand and performed very well, Benchmade did a good job with the HT and Tempering of M390.
2nd is the Cardboard, the knife was stropped on a SIC loaded strop and then I proceeded to cut the cardboard, as you can see here it did very well, this is a lot of cardboard. The knife would still cut printer paper clean after the cardboard.
3rd was the wood cutting, I took thick and thin slices to test for edge stability, the edge wasnt touched before the wood and it would still slice printer paper clean after.
In conclusion the knife performed excellent, I didnt notice any problems in testing and M390 held an edge as expected with no more than normal edge wear. The blade is centered and fit and finish is excellent as to be expected from Benchmade.
