Hello to all. I am relatively new to knives. I own Spyderco Tenacious G-10 and Military G-10 in CPM-S30V. My last piece is Benchmade 810 Contego G-10 with combo-edge black coated in CPM-M4. It didn´t come as sharp as my Spydercos but still pretty sharp. I really like this knife but I have two problems.
1. The detent in my knife is not so strong. With use of force I can switch it open without even touching the AXIS lock. I mean it is not so horrible because I think that in normal conditions it won´t open in my pocket. Is that normal? I currently live in Czech Republic so sending it to Benchmade Company across half the world is not an option neither is openening the knife by myself as I am not a technical type and I would loose the warranty so I think I will need to live with it. Once the knife is opened the lock seems pretty strong though.
2. Other problem is that I fear rust so I wanted to ask Benchmade if they´re planning to release this knife in some other steels, for example: CPM-S30V with maintaining other specs of the knife. I saw that there is a sprint run in M390 but the color and the absence of the glass breaker put me off. If not, is there any possibility how to to manage that?
Thank you.

The weight of the blade on the Contego is what makes the "detent" feel weak. Technically, Axis knives don't have a true detent, as it is just the Axis bar and Omega springs holding the blade back. My 810 can be swung open fairly easily, but I am definitely not worried about it opening in my pocket.

Why S30V? M4 outperforms that steel in every single way aside from corrosion resistance. Being that you already have an 810, you could buy the M390 version and swap the handles and glass breaker over, creating the knife you want.

Thank you for your answer. About the first problem you calmed me down. :)
But the second problem is that I am really not the technical type so I don´t feel I could do it and in manual from Benchmade it says that by openening your knife breaks the warranty.
Also I forgot to ask. Is it normal that I can screw out the thumbstud with fingers?

As long as you're not stripping screws or messing everything up, your warranty is safe. I have disassembled all of my Benchmades and have yet to have the factory send one back with a "Sorry, but you opened it" note.

You don't need to be technically advanced to open a knife. Just leave the Axis Mechanism (ie: everything inside of the liners) alone, and you'll be fine. Use quality Torx bits and take your time :)

Thank you. I may try it when I´ll have enough money. I just wanted to ask one more thing.

M4 is the production steel, so we will only see other steels as limiteds or gold class. At least for the near future...

No, it's not normal for the thumbstuds to be that loose on the knife.

Some good advice above -- there are also lots of videos and tutorials on the internet -- if you do a search, you can probably still find full take-downs of a Grip and a 940? The videos and the kind people on this forum have helped me a lot! I think if you watched a couple and took your time you would feel confident to switch out backspacers or swap scales. I'm certainly no pro, but I've been able to tweak my BMs with the info I've learned:D

Yes fiddling with the knife technically voids Benchmade's warranty, but most people's experience has been that Benchmade will still honor the warranty and fix your knife.

Few locks are stronger than the Axis lock. As for flicking it open so easily, you can tighten the pivot screw a little bit to prevent that. All you need is a T8 torx driver. This will not void your warranty, as the knife is designed to be adjustable to suit the individual owner's preference.

The M390 version is the only stainless version out right now. Your only option would be to buy that one and swap blades. I've disassembled my knives many times (and even sent one or two back to Benchmade long after having done so), and Benchmade doesn't bat an eye at it unless you've done something to really change how the knife functions. A simple blade swap won't do that. There are videos on how to do it, and we can help you here. There are a couple tricks that will make it easier to reassemble the knife.

Your thumb studs use a T6 torx driver in the center to tighten/loosen them, or if they are not smooth round thumb studs, a 3/16" socket will fit over them (sorry, but they are Standard American English (SAE) units, not metric). A 5mm socket might work, but it is technically too big.
