So buying a knife, again, running out of kidneys to sell. Just wondering if any of you like the 810, also how it is compared to the 940/940-1(Only BMs I own). I want to know the positives and negatives of the 810 compared to the 940. Also, I don't have any experience with CPM M4, how is it(Edge Retention, Corrosion Resistance in a non-humid environment, Ease of Sharpening)? I've also heard of problems with the scales being too sharp. Is it easy to get used to?

If you like large EDC, take 810. CPM-M4 is awesome. Relatively tough, wear resistant and corrosion is not such a big deal with it. Also consider 810-1401 with M390 steel.

The 810 is a big knife. Yes it has really sharp jimping/milling. M4 is a great steel; it holds and edge and is very tough. I have no experience with sharpening M4 but my guess is that it would be tough to sharpen without diamond rods with the rockwell hardness being so high. Others can give more accurate info on that though.

The Knifeworks M390 Contego is a bit less aggressive handle wise if that is a worry.

My g10 is great and the hamdle scale problem is very easy to fix. A little sandpaper and about 15 mins and mine came out perfect. Honestly the cpm m4 is an amazingly weird steel. I have my 810 for hard use and that's about it. I can't chipped the blade if I tried it seems like. The stuff stays razor sharp if you strop it. Only thing is I live about two hours from the ocean. There's no lakes or we don't have a pool. It never rains here and the edge on my 810 where it isn't coated will show rust spots in about a weeks. The strop will take it out but like on the benchmade butterfly logo it is spotted and I'm sure the tang is rusted all out where it pivots. Honestly I love this knife but the rust deal drives me insane. Go for the m390. I have had many m390 blades and it by far my favorite steel. Hope this helps

Since you already have the 940-1, I'd definitely get the M4 810 as long as you don't mind the 810's length (nearly 4 inches vs the 3.5ish on the 940)... the 940-1 uses s90v which is super resistant, but VERY soft, and the 810's m4 is the polar opposite.

M390 is a good balance between the two, but since you're in a non humid environment I'd go with the M4 instead.

edit: as far as ease of sharpening, they are all identical, since you can just send them back to BM to do it for you :D

Thanks for all the information on the 810. I think I will get the M4 version and just sand the scales.

I own a 940-1 (LOVE it) and then I wanted a bigger version of it, so I got an 810 Contego. They're both great, but be forewarned the Contego is a huuuuuuuge folder compared to the 940-1. It's actually not bad to carry at all, but it will undoubtedly freak people out if you open it in public.

If you want something more normal sized, but similar blade shape and staying with the Osborne design, I'd take a serious look at the 950. I don't have a 950 yet, but I imagine it'll bridge the gap nicely between the 940 and 810.
