Benchmade 890 Torrent pivot problems

I just received my 890 Torrent in the mail today. When I took it out of the box, the first thing I noticed was that the pivot point was really loose, so loose that the blade was almost touching one of the liners. There was also significant side to side blade play. I tightened the torx screw a bit and got the blade centered. However, after only about 15 flicks, the pivot got really loose again and the blade was almost brushing the liner. Does anyone else have this problem with the knife?

With any Benchmade - you take a drop of BLUE lock-tite or some use white teflon plumbing tape (tiny bit wrapped around pivot screw). I clean the pivot screw and inside with a pipe cleaner 1st, then put a drop of BLUE lock-tite on a bit of wire or paper clip - touch the pivot screw and you'll see it wick around the threads. Then adjust the pivot so the blade's centered and the assist works too. (sometimes you sacrifice a "tiny" wiggle to get optimal opening speed - your call)

Leave it on it's side on a flat surface, with the pivot screw down for about 1/2 hour, then rotate with pivot screw facing up. Then turn it again and leave it set for 24 hrs and it's completely cured. Problem solved! Takes about 10 minutes and a couple of turns as mentioned above (distributes any excess lock-tite evenly). ;)

Hi goldensombrero6 -

cziv has some great advice - I would try the blue loc-tite and see if that holds it.

That said, my knife was perfect and I have not had to make one adjustment to it since I received it.

You can send it back to BM and they will take care of you; I have read many great things about their customer service.

Here is a picture of mine just because.

Best of luck with your knife, and please post pictures when you have a chance.

It's a beautiful knife, isn't it? The only non-fixable thing that I can complain about is that there isn't enough stiffness in the liner lock and it's too easy to disengage accidentally. Hopefully I won't be using it hard enough for that to be a problem.

Yes it is a beauty and large too. It's not gotten the respect it deserves due to the lock as you mentioned and the grip is very slick. It's a gentleman's knife, but what gentlemen carry an assisted opening knife that big!

Hi guys -

I agree - it is a beauty!

My wife picked this model out for me as an anniversary present. She did a great job - she had been listening to me when I was talking about my knives, and she got one with a deep carry clip and was made in USA.

I love mine, and I carry it all regularly. It slides in and out of your pocket well, and I have had no issues with lock-up or operation - it locks up tight with no play, it's perfectly centered, and it is smooth just like all the Benchmades I have handled.

It also has a great thinly ground blade that makes this puppy slice wonderfully.

That's weird, I've never had any problems with mine

They are sweet little knives though aren't they?

Just a thought here. If you are comfortable enough in taking it apart, you can add some bend to the lock for a stiffer lock. This is something I do with my linerlocks, and framelocks. I like a stiff lock!:)
