Why is it hardly mentioned around here? I love mine. It is a fantastic knife. The only downside for me is clip placement, but I can live with it. 3.6" 154cm blade with a nice belly and precise tip. The clip is deep carry, tip down and it does not screw up my pockets. The thumbstud is not ambidextrous. I'm a righty but can open it fairly easily with my left hand if I need to. It's assisted but easy to take apart if needed. The shape is extremely elegant, enough to please non-knife people. Anyone else???

I really like it and I wanted one for a long time. I finally bought one but it came screwed up so I can't carry it until I send it back in for repair.

I like my 890, have owned it for a year or so...sent it to LifeSharp for one of their superb factory edges when dull and is one of my favorites; the A/O is Uber smooth and the blade is perfectly centered. There's no problem with the clip at all, it stays put in my pocket!

Sorry to hear that. Can you elaborate?

I'm the second owner. When I received it I noticed that one of the parts is missing from the nitrous system. The previous owner (first owner) claimed to not know about it and claimed that he didn't disassemble the knife, so the knife much have shipped from the factory that way. I'm sure that the factory will fix it, but I'm not sure if it will be covered under warranty since I'm not the original purchaser. I like everything about the knife and I'm anxious to get it fixed so I can carry it.

Mine was my first higher end knife last year and I carried it every day until I got another knife in February to add to the rotation. It is a great knife and serves me well!

Hi BD, I wouldn't worry about sending your knife up for warranty service; many of mine are second owned and they've always taken care of my repair requests.

It's funny because, I've been buying BM's for over 12 years now, and I have never really fully appreciated the Torrent until recently. I left my BM catalog out at work the other day, and my partner started to look through it.. (He's not a knife guy at all, and doesn't own any folders).. So he's looking through it, and he asks my opinion on which one would be cool to start with. I mention a few classics 710, 94x series, etc.. And he ends up choosing the Torrent on his own :)

When it finally arrived, he was showing it off to me at work and I really *like* this blade. Very nice ergos, stonewash is always a +100, and the G10 scales have a nice texture on them. Why did I miss this one before? - I dunno, but I'll prob pick one up in the near future as well. I wish BM stonewashed more of their blades - HEAR that BM!

If he did take it apart it's weird that it's missing a part. It's quite easy to take apart. He probably dropped it somewhere. Once it is fixed you're gonna love it

Same here. It was my first $100 knife and first Benchmade. Definitely made an impression

Well there are several reason I have never bought one, but I am starting to cave thanks to this thread. :)

1. tip down carry
2. assisted
3. no axis-lock

I have always liked the styling and blade shape on the 890 though. With enough convincing I could see giving it a try.

Good looking knife but I do prefer the axis lock over any liner lock I have tried. Tip-up only carry and right hand only opening stud are other "features" that I do not favor. I note that BM only has two knife models with the Nitrous system so apparently it has not been too popular compared to the Axis Assist.

I have the M390 torrent and love it. Only problem is that it can be opened by the right hand only. There's no left thumb stud or even a cutout in the left scale should you decide to switch the thumb stud to the left side.

My buddy has one. I am not a huge assisted opener fan but it works very well. I bought two of the Optimiser AO's when BM came out with assists and I HATED it. The Torrent version though is very nice and works well. My only complaint is the G10 is way too slick for me. I keep telling my bud to take some sandpaper to it but I think sandpaper + expensive knife = scared. Don't really blame him he only has two BM's and it took me awhile to screw up the courage to "modify" my first pricy knife.

Good knife overall. Just not my thing. I still like axis better.

My Torrent has a blade that is so off centered that it touches the liner. I've tried to adjust it using every trick in the book (many methods of tightening and loosening all the screws, swapping the washers). It just plain sucks. If the pivot is too tight you cant even force the knife open. But if you breath on the pivot screw and just SLIGHTLY loosen it, the blade has a ridiculously unstable feeling amount of side to side blade play. I love this knife and I hate it because its such a big POS. I'm finally at my wits end and am going to see if benchmade will do something about it. Does Benchmade "fix" knives when the blade centering is so bad that its rubbing on the liner?

As the same with many others, the 890 was my first $100+ knife. I'm not sure why that is for so many people. Maybe people stray away from the assisted knives. IDK, but the assist functionality is really forceful and awesome. It's not better or worse than an axis lock. Its just different. Either way, it's a damn sexy knife!

The Optimizer was their first offering into the A/O world. It used a torsion bar held against the tang of the blade by one very small set screw. On the other hand, de-assisting the knife took about 25 seconds. Back the screw off with the tiny hex wrench and slide the bar out. These were much better in the manual mode. Put the screw and wrench in the box for safekeeping, but once done I never went back to A/O.
