Just picked up a Benchmade 940 in D2 steel. A limited edition from Knifeworks. One of 240 made with blue back space and D2 steel.

It's a little beat up and the tip is chipped off.

Picked it up for 50 bucks.

How did I do?

Will post some photos when I have a moment.

$50 for any modern Benchmade is a steal! You could even send the knife in and have the tip repaired or the blade replaced for $30.

So do I replace the blade with sv30 or D2 ?

If I do replace the blade Does it matter that it won't have the le numbering on it? There's no box so I'm not planning on selling it as an investment.

In the condition you described, it probably doesn't have much "collector" value. Might as well send it in and let Benchmade replace anything that needs replacing and slap a new blade in it as well. They might be able to put a D2 blade back in it since they are making them for the Cabelas 940 right now. I don't know if they'd be willing to renumber it for you or not though.

I would contact Benchmade and inquire about the option to have the blade repair/replaced and if replaced could/would it be numbered/renumbered

Unless the blade has been damaged beyond reasonably normal use, no need to replace it. Just resharpen and use it until you really need the service. Blades don't have expiration dates.

It's a steal, too bad when the tip breaks it almost never leaves a tango shape, making regrind much easier!
