Benchmade 910SBTCG vs Mass Transit Bus

While it is always depressing when one of my knives is beaten to a pulp, I figured it would be nice to share the results of this bout.

Working in downtown baltimore has its dangers, but today it was more dangerous for my poor Stryker. I was coming back across the street, and stretched my leg far forward to avoid a pothole. It was obviously a little too far stretched, my stryker slipped right out of my pocket, and by the time I realized it, there was no way I could go back. A very large MTA bus was only feet from the knife.

I actually contimplated whether I could make a run for it, grab the knife, and jump to the far side...Then I came back to reality

I stood there as my knife was ran over not by one tire, not two tires, not three tires, but four tires. This was one of the many extened buses with an attached section on the back. After the bus had cleared I went to retrieve my knife.

Remember the spec of this knife as I tell you the results, 3.75" ATS-34 blade, G-10 handles, with dual titanium liners.

The handle's G-10 slabs were completly crushed and broken apart. Both titanium liners were crushed together. There were deep scars all over the blade, but to my surprise there was not a single but of damage to the blade edge itself. Oh and lastly, the pocket clip was broken in half.

As a remind of how cruel the world can be, I salvaged the blade and plan to hang it above my display case. Benchmade Knives are great quality, but it just wasn't enough for this fight

wow, this sets a new standard in knife testing. I was thinking about getting a benchmade, but if they can't stand up to minor abuse like this, I might have to reconsider...

ps-- sorry to hear about your knife.

I guess this is kind of like rubbernecking at a car crash, but I would love to see a picture or scan of the knife. I'm sorry about your loss, but this could be a whole new level of destructive testing! "Sure your knife will withstand 900 pounds of pressure at the lock, but how does it do in the Bus Test?"

Just be glad it wasn't you under the bus, they probably would not have stopped then either!

I've still got the blade, but as for the rest, it was in pieces

I didn't think at the time to keep all the little chunks of it

I'm planning to get a picture of the blade posted as soon as I have a chance.

Funny though, now that I think about it the back spacer was gone...wonder what happened to it.

Dark Nemesis,

Sorry to hear about your run in with the MTA.

In all seriousness I would send the knife to Benchmade along with a note on what happened.

They may very well replace the knife. I believe that they replaced a knife that had been blown up in a building demolition for Mike Turber.

I would also encourage you to post this over at the Benchmade Forum.

Actually, (although I'm very sorry to hear an innocent knife was damaged through all this) I really think the story would have raised my interest a lot more if the knife SURVIVED the incident! After all, I still got a few bucks left on the VISA Gold Card!

(Alas, I've attended way too many post-mortums on folders here on the forums

This really sets a standart for knife testing.
And you see, the lock didn't fail at all ;-)
so this is a real test for a knife which is build for generations, just put the knife in your trousers and wait on the freeway for a truck. someone else could tell us then if the knife is truck solid.
So this i a test for the real tough guy..... Busse where are you....;-)

Please accept my sincere condolences for the untimely demise of your 910.

When I informed my small collection of 910s of your loss, there was a hushed, horrified silence. I think one of them may even have shed a small drop of Militec-1.

A suitable memorial should be placed in it's honor.

Dick

Please thank your 910's for the moment of silence. The blade is already hanging on a leather cord on the wall next to my display case.

I was thinking of putting a wreath on the light post where it happened, but then it occured to me....one of the many many homeless would just take it down and sell it

I always feel terrible when I hear of the demise of a good knife before it's time. Please accept my condolences. Extra please because I just jabbed you in the thread about Zytel. You provided the setup and I couldn't resist it.

They say in similar circumstances that you should get right back up on that puppy. No. I know they say something at times like this. Please consider it said.
