I held a 921 for the first time tonight. Sweet knife. Smoothe as silk. Just wondering how many of you actually use the little blade? And if you do use it, what are the kind of tasks that you put it to? Just seems to be too difficult to get that blade open (compared to the main blade). I could see using it for light whittling and stuff, but for opening mail and boxes, and general cutting tasks, just seems easier to flick open the main blade. Your opinions appreciated.

Yeah...I dont use the little blade much.

Basically just clean my fingernails with it. Gives me an excuse to pull the knife out, because artist fingernails are always dirty. It is fun to see if people realize it is there. Some people don't notice it or think it is part of the hanlde design.

But the main blade packs a lot of cutting power. And it is easily the most precise cutting folder I carry. I do use the larger blade to open my mail....then I stack the junk mail up and cut it in half....it is quite fun and the blade still holds an edge marvelously. I do that with my 710 (154cm) too but it needs a touchup more often.

Like you already know it is smooth and lightweight. I find the clip attaches easier to thicker clothes but doesnt grip as tightly. So it has flown from my pocket when I was probably doing some Jackie Chan-ish movement and it has a few dings in the handle.

I like it and it seems to get along well with those of a non-knife persuasion.

I have used the small blade for opening mail and boxes and for cutting string, but now I let it just sit pretty while the main blade does all of that. After all, why use S30V and try like mad to 'save' it? It's value is in its retention and protection of thin, sharp edges. Oh, and looking extremely cool.

I've used the secondary blade only a few times in the several months I've had mine. Mainly, cleaning under fingernails and sometimes opening a package. I'm like you, it is harder to deploy than the main blade, but it is handy in some situations where a small blade is needed.

Greetings Fellow Switchbackers: Have not used little blade. Looks ideal for fingernail cleaning, as mentioned. My Switchback is back in box after two to three hours of total carry time.Don't know whether to carry or collect it. So far, it is the only knife I own made of this S30V. It seems really sharp. It is lightweight. I bought it for summer carry, when wearing lighter trousers...and for the smooth action. Currently carrying the Spyderco Tim Wegner Clipit, but that's another thread. I bet the Benchmade Switchback would work well as a fishing knife for things such as cutting braided or low stretch lines such as Burkley Fireline ( or that SpyderWire stuff ). Is the little blade made from another material? If so, was that just to keep costs down? Not sure, but I am thinking the little blade is 440c or something..which is still cool....rdogout..stay safe.

Has anyone considered trying to make one of the blades have high polished edges for push cutting, and the other blade have a rougher edge for slicing? Seems like that would give a good use for the seconed blade.

Many may not have the need.., but the smaller 440C blade is excellent for scribing, and also does a nice job for most packages.., envelopes...etc.

I agree it is not as easy to deploy as the main blade, but since speed isn't a factor for my uses, I do find the smaller blade is great for certain tasks..., and also sharpens easily with a pocket stone.
