For those of that own or have handled the 940-1 is it a fairly common issue for the blade to be severely off center where it is almost rubbing the handle scales? I know that it is usually mildly off center but I didn't think it would be this bad. Is there a way to fix it or should I send it off to benchmade?

Welcome PGN, your 940-1 is not a cheap knife. There are plenty of posts on how to center a knife right here on Blade. However, Benchmade as a large scale production company, can have it's good and very bad days, as most if not many of us have had to send theirs (many different models including the 940-1) back. On centering in general, yes, it's fairly common...but not restricted to Benchmade as a rule.

It's not so much a 940 thing as it is a Benchmade thing.. You can try to fix it at home but run the risk of damaging screws or other hardware. There have been reports of off center blades coming back off center. So, flip a coin and go for it!

heres the method I use on my off center Benchmades the 940 included. 1st loosen the pivot screw. 2. loosen all the body screws. 3. Hold the blade to the opposite side(the knife is closed during all this)from which it is off center. 4.While holding the blade to the opposite side from which it was off center tighten the pivot screw tightly. Tighten the body screws. Blade should be alot closer to center now. Loosen the pivot screw incrementally to where it opens easily and there is no lock rock.

Good luck

Seems like about 50% of Benchmades aren't well centered. About 90% of mini Grips.

Both Minis I've had were off, but adjustable. My 940-1 was way off, and I tried the above listed method among others, and it wouldn't budge at all. It went in for service, it was centered when it came back and it appears to have thicker bronze washers than it did in its first incarnation.
