I purchased this 940-1 second hand and almost everything seems perfect. The logo is laser etched, the standoffs are a beautiful blue, the SV90 was difficult as always to sharpen, and the axis lock is buttery smooth. However, I just realized that one of the carbon fiber scales does not have a groove milled out (circled in the pictures). The other scale has the groove as you would expect.

I am wondering if this knife was somehow modified, a factory error, or even a fake? Everything about this knife feels right, except for this one issue. Scratching my head on this one, please let me know what you think!

More than likely a factory mistake. Someone recently posted pics of a Crooked River without a swedge on one side of the blade.

Looks to me like the whole scale isn’t milled!

Keep it! Its a rare mistake! Worth potentially millions! Like a missprint coin.

Lol. Or send it in, they’ll fix it for you.

Send it in for service. They will probably replace the scale that's not milled. Also make sure to leave a note not to sharpen it. Since you already did.

Hey there! Give us a call today and ask for our Product and Warranty Specialist and we will get you taken care of. 800-800-7427.

Big thanks for all the replies! I'm moving in a few weeks so I can't ship anything until I settle down. I'll be sure to take care of it in a month!

When something like this happens, Benchmade should not only fix/replace the defective knife but also give the customer store credit worth at least half price of the said knife. Actually, all manufacturers should do the same.

We made a few slab side sets of scales about a month ago for someone. They are indistinguishable from the factory except the milling. Don't have any idea what he used them on.
