I picked up a new Benchmade 940 Osborne from a reputable online store. Looking at the knife the blade seems narrower that what I have seen in photos. Maybe it is the perspective in the photo or my OCD. I am wondering if the knife was a re-furb.

Could a 940 owner check their knife for the width just past the butterfly logo. I get approx 0.80 inches. I included some photos.

Greatly appreciated!!

At the Butterfly, my 940 is 13/16" or .81" from the spine to the cutting edge.

My 5 yrs old 940 width is almost 0.8". The sharpening notch width is 2mm.

you're in luck I have mt calipers and 940 right beside my keyboard! it hasn't been sharpened yet so its as close to factory condition as possible.

mine reads at .818 at that point. so yours may have been sharpened. a lot of people don't like benchmades edge geometry so that might also go to explain why that may have happened (if it did happen). if you check out the width of .018 on your caliper you'll see how small a difference that is though. I wouldn't really think twice about it if I were you

Thanks guys. I measured again and I am more like 0.78" at the Butterfly. So I'm probably 0.04" narrower, not a big deal but it does seem to throw off the geometry a little. The blade looks pretty narrow compared to the handle. I looked at a lot of photos and it does seem that blade width does vary. The knife is brand new so I think it came from the factory this way. I have a couple of other Benchmades and the quality has been great. I am a little disappointed in this knife.

With BM's lifesharp service, you may be able to convince them to switch the blade out. Try sending an email and asking or send it out to them if you don't mind the turnaround time without the 940.

Sorry to bump this thread, but did you ever contact Benchmade If so, what happened? I just got a 940 myself and it measures the same as yours, 0.78 inch at the butterfly. It's really not a huge deal but if you were successful in getting the blade switched, I'd like to as well.

I've seen the benchmade factory tour online and they do say that all the final sharpening is done by hand. So it could be they have some variation. I have two grips, one in s30v and one in m390. Both are Doug Ritters with the same grind and there's about 1/16 difference. I'm sure I haven't sharpened my old one that much.

Also, keep in mind that some runs of 940's (and others) have had smaller/larger butterfly logos depending on when they were made, and that tends to skew your perspective a bit. Yours looks fine to me.
