I have a Benchmade 940 bought about 18 years ago with a partially serrated edge in 154 CM. I had not used it much, but to open a few boxes (never used the serrations). It has kind of sat in my knife storage unused, but recently got the 940 bug.

I do however lean toward straight edge blades now so was looking to get a blade swap and Benchmade wants $90 for a new blade. Seems a bit excessive as its almost 40% of a new knife's cost. I understand it was about $30 a year or so ago. (Bad timing)

Anyways does anyone know of any other options to get a straight edge 940 blade only other than trading it or selling it and just getting a new one? I am kind of attached to this one just don't love the partial serrations.

If it were me I would just get a new 940. If the old one has some kind of sentimental value, just switch the blades and now you have two nice knives or sell the one you don't want. It's funny but when I first saw that a new blade was only $30.00 it made me wonder why the rest of the knife is so darn expensive. It seems that $90.00 is more realistic. Also I have to wonder if Benchmade still honors the $30.00 price for replacing blades that are worn out or broken.

We have a similar situation…I have an old Benchmade 941 with the same hideous
partially serrated 154 blade. I’ve always toyed with the idea of sending it in for
a blade replacemen. $90 is too much for replacement imho. Also my blade is stamped
”Pre-Production 0685/1000”. Not sure if that makes it collectible.
Regardless, it’s user for me. I broke down a huge cardboard box yesterday and the
hideous serrations went thru that box pretty darn easy.
I do like the new 940 series auto, maybe down the road.

Sell the old one, and pop for a new 940.
I just got a 940-1 and LOVE it!

Leto, If you join BF, members can PM you, it cost me 10 bucks when I first joined.
I am building a grail out of 940-1501 bones. Sharpen yours and use it or sell it on our exchange, selling requires a ~30 buck subscription. Heads up, lots of fake 940's in the wild, so be careful where you buy.

Great recommendations. I will probably end up getting a new straight edge for a user and consider selling my old one if it sits unused longer. Got to get the gold sub.

What is a "gold sub"?

I am in the same quandary, but I still love my partially serrated 940 from 2002, LOL. What bothers me is possibly losing this thing, which was given to me by a dear friend in return for a hand signed Richard Marcinko book (very colorful signature to say the least). It was also my only EDC for 17 years. I am toying with getting a 9400.

I think the 940 in all the flavors is a classic, worthy of using for a decade as well as customizing as a grail. I'm on waiting list for a MagnaCut reblade at 0.09 inch blade stock and ~0.0099 BTE, RogueRiver Bladeworks 3D CF clip on modded CF scales with burl inlays. Getting ready to sell on exchange for first time to fund the work. Going to have DavidMary thin out my 20cv and s30v blades to same specs. I am very interested in comparing them. The 20cv blade has not been sharpened once in over 2 years of normal EDC use, and I learned to love Benchmade's s30v already.

I am amazed at BM’s s30v. I despise Spyderco’s s30.

Can anyone else confirm the blade replacement used to be $30?

sure and gas was once 027.99 cents a gallon. kidding aside, yes.

ferdiad, so what makes you despise Spyderco's s30v? Many have sung it's praises. I have trusted more then a few BMC's knives with s30v, but I'm sure someday, if I live long enough, I will get one of marginal spec. My only Spyderco is a native 5 in s90v, seriously great steel!

I’ll buy an old 940 partially serrated blade from anyone looking to replace it. Preferably in good condition or better. I’ve gone through about 200 pocket knives or so over the past 5 years ($50-$1500) and my 940-1 keeps finding its way back into my pocket. Not perfect in every aspect but it checks A LOT of boxes for its size and weight.

Chippy, chippy, chippy. Both Spydie s30 and s35. However, I swoon over their m4, 52100 and cpm20v. And I just got some of their cruwear. Amazing steel.

Yea... Benchmade priced themselves right out of the game as far as I'm concerned, which was probably the point. They were probably tired of replacing blades for people. Whatever the reason, it sure reduces the value of Benchmade knives in my opinion. Back in the day, they used to let you swap from a painted or dlc pocket clip, to a stainless clip (and vice versa) for no charge. Now it's a $10 fee. With the prices of everything rising, I suppose something had to give.

Personally, I just don't see the point spending $100 (or more if you are replacing a premium steel blade) on a replacement S30V blade from Benchmade at all.

I'd rather just toss another $100 to a custom maker and get a blade made from absolutely any steel I want...

Like this 945 with a MagnaCut blade.

Just buy a new one and hang onto the old one. The pre production numbering is definitely cool and the fact that you’ve had it for so long means you should hang onto it yet.

I recently just stopped carrying my mini griptilian my dad got me for xmas 13 years ago. Was my sole edc knife for all those years (looks the part too). Well now, even though it’s just a mini griptilian (dlc blade with sand scales), it is discontinued in that color scheme and it was a gift, so it’s sentimentally valuable to me now and I don’t want to lose it at work.

So I went and got a mini bugout before getting an Osborne after realizing the mini bugout might be tooooo small. But I ended up with the 9400bk automatic. It’s wicked. I then bought my very first OTF and even though I’m infatuated with the OTF, that automatic 9400 Osborne is still my favorite.

New 940 or 9400 -do it.
