I am feeling a little bit like a heretic here, but after years of singing the praises of Spyderco products, I am writing to say just how nice a little knife I am finding the above knife to be. It actually is not that small, the blade measures 3 3/8" on my ruler, which makes it illegal in Washington, DC, where I work, with its 3" limit. But the whole knife is so finely designed that it appears much smaller. It is a true "Gentleman's Pocketknife" in a modern iteration. It has modified spear point on the blade and a very distinct swedge to the top of the blade. The blade is 13/16" wide at its widest point, near the base at the thumb stud and holds that for 1 1/4" until the swedge begins on the back of the blade, when it begins a graceful curve down toward the grind line and thence cuts down to the point. The edge is straight for about 2 1/2" and then starts a fair curve up to the point. The scales are anodized aluminum and are heavily sculpted in a series of graceful curves, all leading to a most pleasing effect. Being an Axis Lock, it has release slides on both sides, up near the pivot, which is flush on the right and near flush on the left. The clip is set for tip up carry and is reversible, left to right. The knife is totally ambidextrous, for you lefties and for those who want a weak side carry. There appear to be partial liners of steel, which come out to the edges near the front of the knife, top and bottom. These are given a toothiness for traction, a very nice touch that is not intrusive.

The function of the knife so far has been absolutely flawless. Openning has been as smooth as the proverbial baby's bottom and lock-up has been absolute. It releases only when requested, and then does so easily. I have not often tried to flip the blade by holding the lock release back and flipping, but I have a few times and it does work. I don't recommend this, however. I have had no accidental opennings in my pocket, the blade detente seems to do a good job of holding it closed. The 154CM steel in the blade seems to be holding up well to the uses to which it has been put. Folks, I like this knife!

Wishes or suggestions come down to one; replace the thumb stud with a hole. I MUCH prefer holes to studs, even if it were to mean a slight bulge in the otherwise oh so svelte blade.

thanks for the info i just ordered a 940bt from 1sks and can not wait for it to arrive

i do have a quick question though as i said i ordered the model 940bt, i have seen post talking about different color handles i saw the light green handle and a dark green/black handle on the 1sks webpage. i figured the bt ment the black coated blade, so are the handles colored on that model or are the the dark green /black???
either way i like the overall look of the knife and hope mine is as sweet as the one you described colored handles or not

Mine has a satin finished silver steel blade and a black clip with a green hilt. I don't know if that helps you.

stubellos,
There is only one shade of green. It just looks different in photos. "In person" they look dark green. You're right, BT means the blade is BT2 coated (black). The 940BT is very cool looking, but be aware that the coating does wear.
I have a blue 940, but will probably get a green one, too. Haven't decided on the 940, or 940BT.

FullerH,
Nice knife, nice description. I don't like thumbstuds, either (the 940 is the only folder I own with them-though a 710 is now on the way), but I think they suit the 940. Putting a Spyderhole on it would require another half inch added to the top of the blade. We don't want it to look like a Jot Singh Khalsa (did I manage to spell that right?) do we?

As I understand it there was a limited run of red and blue handled ones. I've seen pic's of those colors but not in person.

I also have a BM 720 Pardue which I have also called a nice small knife, but, compared to a 940, it is huge! It is only small next to a Spydie Military. The Pardue is very nice, but the Osborne is just SO much nicer, IMHO.

I like to sharpen at a very low angle, and the thumb studs, in my opinion are too big for the size of the knife. It is an excellent knife and I love it very much, but one day, I'm going to get some new studs for it.

Speaking of the 940, the folks at Maxim magazine have a picture of it in the new issue (don't recall what month it was, but its got Tara Reid on the cover) in a Christmas gift guide section.

I really like the 940 also, its probably one of the better Benchmades yet. Very non-tactical and it doesn't make the sheeple jump when you deploy it in public. Definite winner in my book!

Gave one to my non-knife-nut brother last week and he loved it.

The 940 is a great knife; solid, comfortable, and non-threatening. What more can you ask for?

I guess I still have to get one for the collection... off to the local knife store.

Hugh,
Thanks for sharing your impressions, they match completely mine which I have expressed here.

Stubellos,
Please visit my review and you will see that this color is somewhat different at each photo. It is really hard to 'catch" it but it is very nice!

N2S,
You seem to be irreparable optimist if you believe that you will be satisfied with your buy. I'm ready to bet that when you will buy green handled knife you immediately will want blue handled one, next you will want one with red handle and next you will ask how soon another colors will be released

Hey Dex did you check out Maxim's Online gift guide? The 940 is there as well. The really cool thing is when you click on the 940 it takes you to a really cool web site

yeah, the Maxxim folks gotta be KnifeKnuts. They take the exact same issue, put 4 different covers on it, and call them collector's editions. Sound familiar? Mike, did you teach them that?
