Hello everybody,
I'm having some concerns about my 940 I just got this thing for a Christmas present, and it's my second Benchmade. But my concern is the grind angle is rather large @ around 60° inclusive just curious if this is common for Benchmade knives. Thanks for any input.

Your knife is dull? It's not unheard of for a Benchmade knife to be dull when new. It happens. Send it to Benchmade for sharpening. They will do it as part of the Lifesharp program for Benchmade owners.

One post and referring to inclusive angles? I'll bite. Yes, some BM knives come with steep angles.

Thanks for your input, and I checked the angles on a shadow comparator at work so it made me curious about there angles because that seems like a unusual grind angle. The knife feels sharp though but I thought I would ask people with more experience with Benchmade.

Ah, cool, I didn't know those could be used that way. Out of my wheelhouse. Yep, you'll get some like that, I generally prefer 30 degrees inclusive for my edges, you likely won't see that from Benchmade too often. Took me years of owning good knives before I got fed up waiting for a gun show to get my knives sharp. Bought an Edge Pro Apex and never looked back. Good sharpening is like a license to print money. :D

Thanks and yeah that's what I was thinking about the angles and it kinda sucks to have to reprofile a brand new knife though. And as for the comparator it's kinda of a nice easy way to get the angles exact. And I haven't tried any sharpeners yet I've always just used a stones, but I do have a sypderco sharpmaker ordered. But thanks your help.

For redoing the edge bevel, you should look into something like Edge Pro. Removing that much s30v with a sharpmaker is crazy.

Yeah I figured as much and I have regular flat diamond stones that I have always used but I thought I would try a sharpener, for the simplest way of maintaining my my knife edges.

I haven't had an issue with benchmade edge angle in a while they have gotten better . Did your 940 came in the new box or the old box . This is my 943 . Steep angle . Looks terrible .

Yeah it was new in the box, that's what I wanted to get some opinions from people with more experience with Benchmade. I mean it's ground very well it's almost exactly 30 degrees per side, so I didn't know if that's what they sharpen too. Because it seems like a strange grind angle for a pocket knife.

I've redone the edge bevels of two Spydercos in S30V and in M4 using the diamond rods of the Sharpmaker. It can be done but it's not fun.

I would just send it to Benchmade or return it to the seller.

What he was asking is if the box is the old style of box or the new style of box. They improved their sharpening a little while back, so it's a good indicator if your knife was sent out fron the factory before or after they improved their sharpening.

I know you don't want to, but I would send it back or return it bro.
Unless you invest in the diamond rods for the SM, you'll be at it for quite some time!!

Thanks and yeah I've got regular flat diamond stones that I've used free hand for some time. I have it almost where I want it now, but s30v is no joke it's taking for ever even on the diamond stones. I only got the sharpmaker for maintaining my blades. I'm also not sure what the difference in the new vs old boxes.

It's the new box, and thanks for all the input on this you guys are very helpful. Glad I joined the forum.

My 940 came with at least a 25-30 dps bevel from the factory, barely visible. At the time all I had was a Sharpmaker and used some of the Congress Tools triangle stones to reprofile it to 15 dps. Took forever, killed my back and feet, and is an extremely inefficient way to reprofile. I couldn't imagine someone with nothing but the brown stones trying to reprofile and how long that'd take. That was the catalyst for me investing in an Edge Pro and later selling it to invest in a Wicked Edge.
