I recently bought the Benchmade 9400 Osborne and really like the knife except I noticed that when the blade is open there is some play in the blade and it can wiggle slightly from side to side. Is that typical for automatic/side opening knives?

Welcome to the forum!

That doesn’t sound right. I have a Mini Osborne, and everything is rock-solid - there’s no movement at all when the blade is open. I have a few folders of various types, and none of them have any blade play. The only thing I have with a wobble is a cheap POS Chinese OTF, and even that isn’t bad for an auto.

upon more critical inspection it appears that the tiny star head bolt near the pivot is visibly loose and needs to be tightened - I do not have that size star wrench and have reached out to Benchmade for support. When Open - if I clench down on the pivot area of the knife with my thumb the audible wobble is gone.

You'll need a torx driver, it's probably a T10 on the pivot. Benchmade might try to seel you their toolkit, but you can pick one up at your local hardware store or Home Depot for cheap.

^ would recommend a quality driver and torx set like a Wiha instead
