Does anyone know if this will be a limited release model like the 940-2001 or any of the other limited 940 models?

It looks like it might be standard. But hopefully the hrc quoted is wrong as it's listed at 60-62.
Why would you not want it in that range? I’m genuinely curious. I have no complaints about my Deka ran between 60-62 from the early release. It’s definitely not a butter knife and holds an edge very well.

Larrin has spoken before about edge geometry being more important than heat treat and hrc. The trade offs of a higher hardness seems minimal to me.

It's not the end of the world and geometry does matter more, but the 940 doesn't have the geometry. I would think you would then rather have the higher hrc that the steel was designed around for both edge retention and toughness. I'm not a "hard use" guy so it really doesn't matter to me but if you were to pay almost $300 for something you would want it to be as good as possible.

I will say that my S90v 940 is nice, but it is definitely not as much of a slicer as it could be, thanks to the short height and a fairly thick blade. I love mine, but there are better slicers.

There are better slicers for sure, but what can't a 940 slice? :) I have the magnacut 940 ordered and plan to beat the heck out of it. Then, hopefully BM has refined their process a little better and listened to feedback so I can send it in for a re-blade. My first goal is to take the edge down to the lowest angle I can manage without rolling or micro chipping.

Got mine today. Pretty much perfect out of the box. This one has no backspacer but uses standoffs instead. But I like the look.

I for one truly appreciate benchmade listing the HRC numbers. It let's me know if it's what I'm looking for or not and I can decide if I want to purchase or not. I am a little suprised they picked 60-62 mainly because I'd seen another magnacut model on their website I thought they specd at 62-64. I'm sure most folks won't care, but for the folks that do they know in advance.

this is a slick looking version of this knife though. I like the color of those scales alot more than the green or carbon fiber.

This would be a great knife to regrind the blade thinner on

I tend to agree. I think 100 dollars gets you ok. For 300 that puppy should be dialed in to perfection.

I also appreciate that Benchmade publicizes the HRC. A lot of companies stay tight-lipped on Rockwell hardness. 60-62 means they're aiming for 61, and I'm fine with that. It definitely should be a tough chip-resistant blade. Larrin has made it clear that anything above 60 is fine and it's the protocol that matters most. Crucible recommends 60-63 in the data sheet.

I'm willing to bet these blades are positive pressure quenched which results in slightly lower HRC compared to plate/oil quenching. At Larrin's recommended balanced protocol of 2050°/ 350° with a 2-bar quench, you get 60.5 without cryo and 61.5 with cryo, according to Crucible. I'm guessing that's where Benchmade is on these. I would be curious to know if they're using a cryo treatment or not. I've heard that the cryo is where some warpage can happen with Magnacut.

Well I thought I got mine but my 940 labeled box had a 945 in it. Apparently there was a lot or batch that went out mislabeled.

As for the HRC, if it's a small folder I would always rather have the higher hardness to equate to longer edge retention. I hope I don't have this backwards but my understanding of Magnacut is lower HRC gives you better corrosion resistance while higher HRC gives you more edge retention. This is my opinion only but in a folder I always prefer edge retention over anything.

If I need top level corrosion resistance I would find something in LC200N or better since we've already pretty much mastered that class of stainlessness. Magnacut is the big deal to me that we finally get that jack of all trades master of none BUT really shockingly good at all of the above still. Even at the higher HRC it's not the bear that S90V is to sharpen, it's still pretty stainless, and it keeps a heck of an edge. I'm not aware of a better unicorn steel yet.

But I'm still going to get this one because I've really grown to like the pattern even if they spec it "soft" for what you could/should get in Magnacut.

Last minute thought, I would actually love to see a 1 or 2 / A or B added to Magnacut if we are going to continue the trend of some makers selling it at 60-62 while some do 63-64. It would be nice to know right up front depending what you are favoring.

Ordered a 940bk 03 from Knife Center and received a 945 bk 03. Seems it happened to a lot of us. Package was marked incorrectly from Benchmade.

Just contact KC and they will email you a return label. As soon as they verify the return you will have the right 940 sent out. At least that's what they did for me and mine is already in my pocket. The longest wait was on the USPS.

Should have added that I sent it back yesterday. Now I get to wait for the same knife twice. No big deal though.
