Hello, I currently use a full size and mini griptilian, but am looking into purchasing a 940BK. The only aspect that I don't like about the knife if the purple backspacer. Does anyone know if the backspacer can be replaced with barrel spacers from a 940-1 or similar knife? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

No they can only be replaced with the backspacer from the 943 which is blue. Barrel spacers wont work with the way the handle is constructed. The purple backspacer is very thin and only serves for appearance really.

Thank you for the reply. If it's just for appearance, can it be removed altogether without weakening the knife too much? If not, I'll just take a wire wheel to it so it's raw aluminum.

The spacer is actually titanium, i wouldnt try to wire wheel the back of the knife, you will ruin it! The aluminum will scratch up and look like crap if you wire wheel it, and the ridges on the titanium back spacer will more than likely show purple still. If you take it apart you could polish the titanium or anodize it darker with heat , shouldnt be that hard to do. I anodized a spyderco titanium clip over a flame on my stove and it came put pretty good, just dont heat it too hot.

Don't worry, I wouldn't attempt to wire wheel or alter the backspacer while it was still in the knife. Maybe I'll just paint it black, I really don't understand why they went with green and purple, such a weird/bad combination. Thank you for the advice.

They offered a blue one and red one a real long time ago. There was also a black one made for harley which was the 942 with a harley logo, had a 940 blade with a 943 body basically. The gold class was carbon and green but was titanium.
I wish they did offer the 940 in black with the blue backspacer . Im guessing they dont do that so you spend more and get the carbon fiber one. Ive owned a bunch of them, but at the end of the day its an awesome knife no matter what color it is.

You can always buy a 943 and send it in to benchmade and get a blade swap for a 940. $30 for a satin blade and $40 for a black one. That's what I did. That should be an option to begin with in my opinion. I don't think they will swap the scales for you though. You would need to sell yours and buy a 943 and send it in for the blade swap if you want that combo.

Thank you for the responses. I like the green on black of the 940BK, so mixing and matching different components just to get one without a purple backspacer will probably be a waste of time and money. If anything I'll just take some steel wool to it or have it powdercoated black. The 940-1 is an interesting alternative, only $70 more, has carbon fiber scales, no backspacer, and upgraded s90v steel. Only downside (for me) is it only comes with the satin blade from what I've seen, no black coated.

You could send the 940-1 off to razors edge and get the blade ceracoted black for like $30 bucks.

Love the 940 and 943 because they are relatively cheap for such great build quality and s30v, but that purple backspacer really? I couldn't stand being reminded of barnie every time I went to slice an apple. Made the switch, left the blades respectively. I'm sure a polished titanium spacer would look appealing as well, but I needed an excuse to buy another knife anyway. I still might swap the 940 reverse tanto onto the black handle, I'm undecided. Regardless of color, excellent knives.

Oxy-clean in a pot of boiling water will remove anodizing. It turns a darker gray the longer you leave it in.
