Benchmade, 941, 710, or something else

Hello

I'm looking for an everyday carry that be really purely intended for self defense. I've got a mini griptillian that I like a lot, though I use it for more utility purposes (opening boxes etc). I really like their AXIS lock business. I perused the benchmade site, and found the 941 (the spear point osbourne design) and the 710 Mchenry and Williams interesting. Unfortunatly, I don't know which one to get.

Or should I be looking at something else entirely? A nimravus with the concealable kydex sheath I think (while cool) would be a bit much in terms of size concealability.

Thanks!

For Self Defense I'd go with the Osbourne personally.
on my 943 you can depress the axis button and flip it open as quick as an auto. The 941 I played with at a gun show could do the same thing, but the 710 was too tight. haven't tried it so this may be adjustable with the tension screw and make the 710 do it, but the one I played with was too tight.

yeah, you can adjust it with an allen wrench, figured out how to that on my griptillian. gotta be careful, it's rather sensitive to manipulation (it's easy to make too stiff or too loose). 943 looks good to, i'll look into it.

I own both, (actually the 940 but close enough for comparison). I got the 710 on the recommendation of one of my FMA instructors. It was his personal EDC and is excellent for self defense use. IMO the 940/941 has a slightly less secure grip, due both to the scale material and configuration.

I would categorize the 710 as primarily a defense oriented blade that would serve well in secondary use as a utility blade, and the 940 as primarily a gentleman's slicer/utility that could be called upon to serve as a defensive blade.

Hope that wasn't too confusing...

You should also look at the 806D2, even though they're a pain to find (and an even bigger pain to find cheap) these days.

I used to carry one purely for utility, but it would make an excellent SD knife. It's got a good 4" clip-point blade and a very nicely designed (if somewhat long) handle.

Interesting. I disagree though. The 710's design is purely untilitarian in my eyes, it's a wonderful slicer with it's slight recurve. It does have a handle that works in just about any imaginable grip though, so it could be used for self defense if you had to.

I carry for utility only and the 710 is my EDC.

But a knife is a poor choise for self defense, and a folder is an even poorer choise.

My 710 came out of the box pretty smooth, but after wearing in for about six months it's smooth as silk with no blade play anywhere... and I've never made any adjustments to it.

Both of the Benchmades are great knives, but if you want something that is just for self defense, take a look at the Spyderco Civilian. The Civilian is not for every day use, but in my opinion it is probably the best folding knife made for self defense. Between the Benchmades, I would choose the 710D2.

IMO the best SD tool is your legs and your lungs!!! Your grip is fine for what your asking for, probably flash effect only. I' know it's not much help but something to think about ...

No I know what you mean. I would say one's greatest tools are one's eyes, and your ability to read people. It's called "avoidance".

Thanks everyone for their advice

what about the presidio? I don't really know much about this stuff (knives, that is), but as it's in the like tacticool black class, is it better suited for what i'm looking for?

Its few and far between for 806D2 fans. Its a great knife with incredible cutting, slicing and stabbing power. I find it a little small for SD. Its more of a gentlemans knife. I carry it a lot.

Id suggest the original poster get a 552 ritter grip or a skirmish. The 806D2 would be an excellent choice but I dont know if it would be large enough.
