hi all !

So i'm looking to buy a gentleman's folder that will last for years. I was thinking about a 470 emissary, a 477 emissary, or a 943 osborne and i've finally made up my mind. The 943 came out as a winner for me ( but if anyone else has any other knife recommendations, let me know ) and i'm just having doubts about what 943 to choose. The plain one or the one with the black coated blade ? What are the pro's and con's of a black coating ?

please let me know !

thanks

I like the look of black blades on some models, it's less blingy and won't catch the light when you pull it out to cut something. For a Gentleman's folder though I'd go with plain satin steel.

Also, in my experience Benchmade's BK coating does not wear that well when compared to DLC which is very durable. Instead it seems to be some sort of teflon paint which is thicker and scratches more easily. The worn look doesn't really bother me, but it would still be nice if they would make the switch to DLC considering the price range of Benchmade knives.

Anything coated will wear, but assuming you'll use the knife enjoy the experience. If you're concerned about looks, blades in the satin finish will look better longer.

I prefer satin. As Joe above says, they wear better if you don't like the looks of scratched coatings-- I don't.

Satin. You sharpen and drag the stone, cut something a little rough, even jostle against the keys in your pocket and you will have light scratches that won't go away.

I have the 943 in the black coating and in my experience it is pretty tough, you get some wear when cutting cardboard that you wouldn't see on a satin blade, but it's not super noticeable on the coated version either, I'd imagine the only time you would see some scratching is if you cut some metal like a can or something, otherwise it looks really cool IMO on the all black 943 and holds up good

I go with the rest above ^^^ I think BKC uses Durakote for black. I know people likes black, (my rift is 950BK-1) but it does show the wear. AS long as you can live with it, then go for it.
