I just bought a 943 from a major site that was clearly advertised as a S30V model.
Now that it is in hand, it is clearly marked as a 154CM blade. It is a pre 2006, NOT a S30V.

Yes, I feel dissappointed a little. I really wanted to try out BM's S30V.

I'm keeping it, as it is nice. Making no waves. But I really wanted S30V like it was advertised to be.
Should I be concerned at all? 154CM plenty good enough?

If you didnt care, why did you make a topic?

This is exactly what return policies are for. You arent going to hurt anyone's feelings or inconvenience anyone to get what you paid for, thats what being a seller of product is about. Simply call them tommorrow and explain the situation, and talk over the best solution for everyone.

I totally understand the not wanting to bother people, but this is a small issue that would be resolved painlessly if you just did it. You sound like you really wanted s30v, so just go for it!

If they advertised the knife as S30V, then I would certainly have them either send you the advertised knife at no extra expense or have them give you a refund. You should have received the exact item you thought you were purchasing and in this case you obviously didn't.

I know the older models came with 154CM and thats probably what you got.

www.knifeworks.com has the 943 available in S30V (no 154CM available in that model) in several variations and is one of the best online sellers around. You won't be disappointed with them.

I agree with the above post that if the knife was advertised to have S30V from the store where you got it, they should really replace your knife at no cost to one with the proper steel. Of course, if they don't have the S30V version in stock, I see no reason why you shouldn't return the knife for a full refund, and then get an S30V 943 from another store.

Anyway, that said, 154CM is no slouch of a steel. In my experience it doesn't hold an edge quite as long as S30V, though really both hold their edges long enough for it not to matter much. Also, I do find 154CM a bit easier to sharpen.

So in the end, if the blade steel matters that much to you, then you should see about getting the knife replaced in some manner. However, if it's too much hassle, or if it's only a matter of curiosity between the two steels, then I see no strong reason not to keep and use the knife you've got. Myself, I might even be happier with 154CM on a 943 than S30V (well, maybe; if I could get one or the other steel with BM's nicely polished finish, rather than their dulled satin, either would do).

154cm is a good steel, a very good steel. That being said if the knife was advertised as s30v then you should have gotten s30v if for no other reason then 154cm models can be had much less on the secondary market.

I was looking for responses placing a 943 with 154CM in comparison to a 943 with S30V.
I have S30V customs, but nothing from BM and was curious to try it.
I did not have any 154CM either, so keeping this 943 is not a bad thing.

Trust me, I'm not complaining! Any new knife is a good thing in my world.:D

Thanks for those responses!

Yep plenty good enough. S30V is better but Benchmade's 154CM is excellant, and while all my BM 154CMs are excellant my 943 seems to just be slightly better heat treated then the rest.

I suggest that you send it back and get the S30V variant that you ordered.

Benchmade's 154CM is great, but I prefer S30V.

The price paid for the 943 is right in the ballpark for a 154CM. The S30V ones I see now are priced considerably higher than what I paid.
So I do not feel shorted in the least. I was just excited for an opportunity to get a S30V for that great price, and that is what convinced me to buy it.
So, no financial loss on my part at all!

I will not do that.

I can respect that you do not want to badmouth anyone... however I think others would appreciate being made aware ie: if someone were to order from this company they could at least state in there order that the knife be checked before etc to insure they are happy with the purchase.
Just my 2cents.

Chad, I think that will be my standard pre-purchase request from now on. But the company I bought this knife from has such a good return policy (except I would be out the return shipping and insurance cost) I will not complain.

I'm getting the feeling 154CM is plenty fine for my needs! And it IS SHARP!:D
