Hi, I'm trying to decide on a certain folder. Up until now I've only purchased cheaper made knives, my favorite of them the Blur, which I love...I'm looking to step up in quality..
What I'm wanting is an EDC folder. Something that can be used for simply opening a box to gutting & skinning a deer if needed. A knife I can be using 20 years from now...I think I've narrowed it down to the benchmade 950 rift or the Combative edge M1...all comments and suggestions greatly appreciated...

I love and have both of those blades. The Combative Edge M1 is a fairly thick blade where the Rift is move "average" thickness. Additionally, the grind of the Rift affords it a very thin cutting edge, increasing the slicing efficiency.

From experience, both steels: 154 CM (Rift) and N690 (M1) will take very nice edges and both are easy to sharpen (although the M1 has a recurve which may/may not be an issue for your to sharpen). I will say than the N690 seems to hold an edge a bit longer than 154CM.

Both carry very well but the Rift is overall a smaller knife. The M1 has a deep carry clip and is very flat...carrying either is easy.

I like the framelock of the M1 better than the Axis lock, but that is a preference more than anything else.

The Rift comes in more lots of configurations...handle colors, blade colors, combo or plain edge. The M1 comes in only 2, PE or combo.

Exclusivity: M1 is a much more rare whereas the Rift is fairly common. Common does not equal bad...it's just...common.

Gutting/Cleaning deer...I think the Rift is better at that, but I'll leave that to experienced hunters (I only plink at varmints).

Overally flexibility: I think the Rift is more useful as an EDC, but I can't but help love the M1. I would bet you can use your M1 for just about anything.

Both blades are good and you can't make a bad decision. Good Luck!

I really like the looks of the Combative Edge folder and am currently looking into purchasing the SR11, emailed them with no response back after a few weeks.

Also when I added it to the cart on their site my cart showed a quantity of "0" knives for purchase, weird.

I don't know if this will help you are not, I own the auto rift and the rift. I carry the risk for a EDC knife, because I like the light weight of it. At times I think the blade may be suspect, but have had no problems with it to this point.

Hope this helps.

Of the 2 I would pick the M1. I was actually in the same boat as you looking at several knives including the 2 you mentioned and ended up going with neither. I got a DPX HEST 2.0. Overall I'm very pleased with the knife so far. Looks like a rough and tumble knife that fits easy in the pocket. Not something pretty that I'm going to be worried about getting dirty.

Thanks for the feedback...I'm planning on researching and listening to advice to make sure I grab the "one"..
The Zt300 also really caught my eye.. Not sure if I want too drop close 3 bills on a knife our not...my guts telling me to go for it .....but I'm taking my time on deciding...

I would go with the Rift. It is a great knife and there has been one in my right front pocket every single day for the last few years since they came out. It is a great knife and I think worth the $120 they can be bought for. I'm really looking forward to the 810 Contengo that is just now hitting stores. I'm really hoping the M4 blade steel is closer to the hardness Spyderco runs. They are saying it will be run at 62-64 HRC which should hold an amazing edge while still being easy to sharpen. I have a Rift in M4 and it is great steel but doesn't hold an edge quite as long as other M4 I have.

Sorry about the tangent but I'm excited about the new model. Hopefully it won't be too big for pocket carry. I can talk a lot about the Rift so let us know if you have any questions about it. I think the AXIS lock is enough reason to pick it.

m1 ftw, love mines :)
