I recently purchased what was advertised as a Benchmade 970S from a knife dealer that is going out of business. When I got the knife it was a 970SB and packaged in a clam pack. It has a black blade and the clam pack liner says "performance blade coating for corrosion resistance and opening smoothness". Is anyone familier with this knife? Is this the BT-2 Teflon coating on the blade? Dates on the clam pack indicate the knife was made in 1997. Thanks.

The BM coding for the 97X series was as follows: plain blade was 970, serrated 970S, BT was 970BT, and serrated BT was 970SBT.

I think that the last one listed is likely your knife; is the T possibly worn off?

Walt

I believe the "B" refers to teh original teflon coating---pre BT-2

Don' t even open it! Believe it or not, there is quite some collectors value in unopened clampacks especially if it is a popular discontinued model.

Thanks for your help!! Walt I don't think the T is worn off, just 970SB. Even the Bar Code is marked 970SBCP and I am thinking the CP stands for Clampack. Thanks for the warning about not opening it...Sure would like to though...

A Benchmade Emerson model code I have not seen before ? Hmmmmmm.....

Can you scan that puppy or take a picture of it. I would love to see it, and if its truly something unique I would like to make you an offer if you are willing. the Emerson Series is my favorite.

All the knives in the world go round and round, round and round, round and round...DAMN, one of them took my wallet !!! :)

dano; I think you are correct. Looks like a serrated Teflon coated blade to me. 1997 was a little late for the original Teflon coating, though, wasn't it? Walt

Walt, Dano:

I didn't think that Benchmade put the old Teflon coating on the Emerson Series ?

However I do agree with you, thats the only answer I can come to as well. 1997 ? I'm almost positive they were completely using BT2, this must have been from much ,much earlier, don't you think ?

I called Benchmade and talked to "Dawn". She said the 970SB blade coating was BT-2. Thanks for all your help. George
