Benchmade and Patent Number?

I apologize, I'm not sure what section this thread should be in or how picky you guys are about that. I have a few different questions.

Anywho, today I made a knife trade and just wanted yalls opinions. I gave a guy a Case trapper, stainless, classic yellow for my first Benchmade knife, both barely used. I didn't research it at all before we traded because I was sure it was a great deal and Im not a huge fan of trappers. The Benchmade has "2010 Ross Coleman Invitational" printed on one side. I think hes a famous bull rider, not sure. And I noticed on the other side under the Mel Pardue stamp, there is a patent number 6,574,869. I couldnt find any online with the invitational stamp. Could yall tell me anything about this. I thought the number was for the lock design or something.

Can't help with the patent number issue, but that Benchmade is a little more than "barely used". I'd just give it a good cleaning, and rock on.

That Benchmade is a 530. The handle is a glass filled nylon material called Grivory and the blade steel is 154cm. The lock mechanism is the Axis lock. The patent numbers on the blade refer to the lock patent.

The Axis lock is considered one of the best locks in the business and until recently was protected by one or more patents.

Benchmade does a lot of limited runs with special imprints on the blade. Other than the laser etching, your's appears to be a stock 530s (serrated).

That's a great light duty EDC knife you've got there!

I can add a little about the Ross Coleman Invitational. It's a rodeo that runs in Molalla, Oregon-- about 20 minutes' drive from the Benchmade factory. The blades marked like that were promos given to competitors, if I remember right. Benchmade's been a chute sponsor for a number of years.

Fun fact-- Ross Coleman taught my wife how to ride a horse when he was in high school.

You knife weighs less than two ounces! You won't find a better lightweight gents knife for the money than the 530/531 series with BM's Bugout as the only exception. Maybe.

Many people feel that Benchmade missed the mark with the 530's split arrow pocket clip, though. Swap the clip for a deep carry version offered by Benchmade (they're free) and your knife all but disappears. I've lost count of how many times I've forgotten that my 531 was in my pocket!

Both knives are basically the same with the 531 being a little heavier at 2.1 oz. due to G 10 scales and slightly different blade geometry. Both knives use 154cm as the blade steel. Also, REI Co-op offers the 531 with S30v blade steel and green scales for more money.

Your 530 has the early style Axis lock bar. If you send the knife back to the factory, they can upgrade to the newer version. Some say it is easier to use.

You're right about that, most people would say it was used a good bit. You should see what my definition of "broke in" looks like lol My 7 year old Sodbuster Jr. Looks 20 years old

That's really cool man, thanks for the info

I'm not really sure but, I think Benchmade may have recently dropped the 530. It really doesn't make any difference though, it is still a fine knife if you are looking for a super light EDC. Works really well with dress slacks. Anything else we can help with about this knife?

Welcome to BF.com, BTW.

I think you guys covered all I needed to know and then some, thank yall. I'll give my Case a break for a while and see how I like this one.
